Trump is spending a lot of time touting the treatment he received after he tested positive to COVID-19 and was taken to the hospital; often calling it a miracle cure and saying how beautiful Regeneron is.

Turns out Regeneron is derived from tissue from aborted babies taken after an elective abortion…

I’m surprised to not see more attention paid to this given how heavily Mr. Trump has touted his pro-life credentials… this is a scandal.

Why are we not seeing more about this travesty??

I imagine that President Trump was not aware of the connection. Neither was I, until you brought it to our attention. Now that his treatment is done (I assume), I don’t see any reason to embarrass him about it.

I don’t see any reason to embarrass him about it.
Nor do I… the motive should not be to embarrass… but to bring forward a very serious pro-life issue

Considering he is using his sizeable presidential microphone to promote the drug, seems that, at a minimum he should be corrected and he should come out and condemn its use… strongly.

You’re giving him more leeway than I would on the topic… hard to believe the best doctors in the world would treat the President with a totally experimental drug without talking about the drug.

So the fact that every single pro-life organization in the country has endorsed Pres. Trump and calls him the “best pro-life President in history” doesn’t mean anything to you?

Over the years, we have discovered that quite a few meds are made from the tissue of aborted babies. Even the Vatican has OKed the use of meds made from certain cells line of aborted babies.

The President is not a hypocrite. He didn’t know, and he was sick at the time and trusting his doctors to give him the best treatment.

VP Biden is the hypocrite–to claim to be a champion for the “little people,” but willing to make the killing of the “littlest people” legal and a “woman’s right.”

I would be interested in knowing if you (and others) always tell a doctor that “you absolutely refuse to accept any medication for any illness if that med has been derived from the tissue of aborted fetuses.” Do you wear a bracelet that makes that statement so that if you were in a car accident and unconcious, the parameds would know that they cannot use certain meds for your treatment? When you are scheduled for surgery, do you make that clear and put it in your directives to the doctors and nurses?

I don’t. Maybe I should? But I have never heard anyone who does this, and I have never seen a medical-alert bracelet that says this.

And again, the Vatican has given the green light to the use of certain meds with certain cell lines of aborted fetuses. Check it out.

Didn’t say that… or anything close to that Peeps.

Trump is out on the campaign trail multiple times a day touting the virtues of the drug… he definitely knows by now. It is a scandal… does it mean nothing to you that he is promoting use of the drug made from babies as a good?

btw… my wife and I do inquire about the origins of any drugs we take. I fortunately do not have to take prescription drugs, but my wife has had to try all sorts of different thyroid meds and we have asked.

I looked up some info and see that Regeneron claims that they don’t use aborted baby cells in the production, but did use them to test the treatment early in its development.

That is to say that Regeneron’s immoral use of baby cells for this product is finished. However they may continue using the cell line to develop other products. Perhaps Regeneron can be persuaded to give up the future use of those cell lines.

Agree… My point is that the President shouldn’t be promoting the drug as a ‘miracle sent down from God’ (not kidding !) … and I don’t think we should turn a blind eye to the unethical origins of the drug.

The Tablet: ‘Ethically’ Scrutinized COVID Drugs Pose Questions for Pro-Life…

Under certain criteria established by the Vatican, it is allowable, said Father Tadeusz Pacholczyk, a Catholic bioethicist. However, he also noted that taking such a drug should be avoided.
Thanks for the article Denise…good and informative read.

Key section I pulled out…
“Alternatives to the use of these cells is critical,” he said, “and part of the duty of the moment is to increase awareness about the problem.”

To that end, bishops in the U.S. joined pro-life medical professionals in April to draft a letter to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval of “ethically” produced drugs to fight COVID-19.

Archbishop Joseph Naumann of Kansas City penned the first signature. He chairs the Committee on Pro-Life Activities for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

“We are aware,” the letter reads, “that among the dozens of vaccines currently in development, some are being produced using old cell lines that are created from the cells of aborted babies.

“Fortunately, there is no need to use ethically problematic cell lines to produce a COVID vaccine or any vaccine,” the letter reads. “Other cell lines or processes that do not involve cells from abortions are available and are regularly being used to produce other vaccines.”

thanks you for the information that i didn’t know.

I will not trust any mainstream politic man to make a moral stance about a drug he has taken to cure him.

Apparently the story is just plain false; just another attempted condemnation of Trump based on falsehood. The Dems think Catholics are stupid, which is why they try to make fools of us using Catholicism to do it.

There is no use of fetal stem cells in Regeneron. No fetal cells at all. Cells from a living human and rhesus monkeys were used. What is true is that in the process of testing the antibodies, some cells from the old 1972 cell line were used. Those were obtained from an aborted baby, but the abortion was not for that purpose. Most churchmen believe the use of those cells, if necessary to save lives, is permissible.

One can use the analogy of those survivors of the plane crash in the Andes some years ago. They resorted to cannibalism; but killed no one to do it. People who died in the crash or who died from exposure were the objects of it. The survivors doing so was never condemned by the Church. Indeed, the Church said it was not sinful because the use of a body that was not killed for that purpose in order to keep people alive, is not a moral evil.

But again, supporters of the abortion candidates in this election want us “fool Catholics” to think it’s somehow equivalent to killing living children and selling their body parts as espoused by their political party.

Wait, could you cite your specific source on that?

I’m just surprised because while I’d understand a statement about lessened culpability in a life threatening situation, lesser evil than if intentionally murdering to eat, etc… I’d have thought the Church would still teach that it’s a moral evil to cannibalize a human corpse. Even if scavenged. Desecration of a dead body and I’d have thought even something beyond.

Can I see the evidence of this?

These two paragraphs from the article provide a good summary:
Last Friday, as Trump developed worrisome symptoms of covid-19, the president received an emergency cocktail of anti-coronavirus antibodies made by Regeneron. These molecules are manufactured in cells from a hamster’s ovary, so-called “CHO” cells, according to the company—not in human cells.

But cells originally derived from a fetus were used in another way. According to Regeneron, laboratory tests used to assess the potency of its antibodies employed a standardized supply of cells called HEK 293T, whose origin was kidney tissue from an abortion in the Netherlands in the 1970s.

As the above-cited article says, Regeneron tested antibodies with aborted human cells. “Testing” sounds incidental, like it’s no big deal. But it is a big deal. The antibody treatment could not have been developed without it.

To begin the development, Regeneron created many different antibody “candidates” in the hope of finding one (or more) that could stop the virus. Some of the candidates worked better than others. Some probably didn’t work at all. How could Regeneron tell?

To select the winning antibodies, Regeneron tested how well each one sticks to COVID-19 virus proteins. Where did they get the virus proteins? From aborted baby cells that were engineered to produce those specific proteins.

This selection process identified two antibodies that worked well enough for the final version of the treatment.

Regeneron then scaled up production of those two antibodies using a hamster cell line. That’s how they can claim that the aborted human cell line was not used to manufacture the antibodies which go into the treatment.

Tested on =/= derived from. I asked about derivation, which appears to not be from fetal stem cells.

Call it what you like. Regeneron used an aborted baby cell line to create a product they can sell. They didn’t know how else to do it.
