Lately I’ve realized so much of the sorrow and anxiety I’ve felt about being single or dating people who were never quite what I was looking for is because I’ve wanted to do everything my own way, and I haven’t trusted God will put the right person in my life at the right time. Part of the fear of letting go and trusting God is of course the thought that if I let myself trust God completely, and let God make me holy, or as John Paul II once put it, if I “never restrict the action of grace in [my] own soul”, God will of course send me somewhere awful I don’t think I want to go, like a convent! (Then of course I think about all the religious I have known in my life and how much joy they have, and I think that probably wouldn’t be so bad afterall!
). People sometimes have this view that marriage is for those who just weren’t holy enough or just didn’t trust God enough to give their lives entirely to God, which I of course know isn’t true.
But what I’d like is some encouragement, please! For those of you who are married, please tell me your stories about how you let go of your fears, trusted in God, and God put that amazing Catholic man or woman in your life just when you were supposed to meet them. Hopefully someday I will be able to add my own story; or God and I will be having a good laugh at each other from my cell in the convent!
