I know this is a basic question, but I don’t know that its so simple to apply to life. I hear people say “trust in God” or “leave it in God’s hands” but how does that look in real life?

I mean when you are struggling are you just able to say “Jesus, I trust in you” … but that doesn’t make the struggles go away or make them easier. Plus it doesn’t help me to decide if I am supposed to make a change, or think differently.

I know its vague, but I am hoping someone here has some comments that will help me.

I would say that at the very least one who trusts in the Lord will be more joyful. He would learn that God is everywhere. He would not only say in front of sorrows and problems “I trust in You, Lord” or “I leave it to Your hands,” but he would point even to the problems themselves and exclaim, “There You are, Lord!”

Struggles nor sorrows may not go away entirely, but they change into labors of love.

Remember, though, that pain and suffering are always both evil and good. The evil is that they cause distress, and the good is that they tell you something is wrong. That is why it is always sinful to cause suffering on others except when there is no choice to causing them on the course of doing good and if the matter at hand is of a serious nature. On the other hand, it is good to alleviate suffering because you are correcting the wrong that the suffering showed you.

I think of calm resignation to God’s will. Even though times are tough, you are able to remain serene, trusting that God will help you face your problems. Most of the time, He won’t miraculously solve the problem, but He surely will give you the graces necessary to face those problems 🙂

I speak from experience; just recently I have been through extreme desolation but with the help of my family and friends (plus much prayer on my part) I overcame that trial God allowed in my life 🙂

Whenever I feel disillusioned or upset, I have begun thinking about Jesus with His hand in my shoulder, and how He is always with me, and then I begin to feel more at peace with Him and with myself.

May God bless you all abundantly and forever! 🙂

I recently went through a very traumatic and sudden loss of a child and I live the philosophy that you discuss. It is hard to explain but I knew I wasn’t alone and I felt very comforted. I was able to see that He was merciful to my loved one who is now in the glory of His presence. It was the closest that I have ever felt to God. As the previous poster said, pain and struggle does not ever completely go away but I truly believe that we have everything to do with how we choose to confront and cope our trials and tribulations in life. It really is a choice.

This is not intended to be judgemental towards anyone…it is just the revelation that I came to at a time when I couldn’t imagine anything worse ever happening in my life.

Yes it is a bit glib when people say that. I would say instead, make sure you have a right to trust in a specific thing. E.g. Can you just trust you will get that Porsche just because you asked… no. It must be based on a specific bible promise and you need to pray in relation to that. In my experience not just once, but frequently. Also, God sometimes sees a much bigger picture and we cannot see what is coming. He does not have to answer as we want - even Jesus did not have all His prayers answered.

Well for me, it usually means, “Stop worrying about things that you can’t do anything about right now. Make the best decisions you can when the time comes, and in the meantime, look around you and see who else might need your attention right now.”

See, I am kind of a control freak, so I worry way too much about making the right decision. The fact is, if I make the best decision I can with the information available to me, even if it turns out to be the wrong decision, who can possibly blame me?

Thank you for your responses. I am going to re-read them and think about this some more.

In all honestly I feel like I must be doing something wrong… I always question what can I do different to make things better. While I understand the thought of leaving things in “God’s hands” I have a hard time with it. He gives us free will so we can get in our own way and that is what I worry about doing.

I have said “I am leaving this is God’s hands” but then years later I am in the same situation, same suffering … so is that God or me? I don’t mean its been a year I mean it has been more than 10 years

I think God answers prayers in ways that help us find eternal salvation, The solutions to life we need today, might not be the solutions that help us find salvation. Trusting in God, is not a guarantee that bad things will not happen, it is a way of striving for peace when bad things do happen.

A few years ago, I had a mole removed that might be cancerous, about a month after the doctor phoned to say he urgently wanted to see me, it was non Hodgkin Lymphoma. Our best friend had this cancer, and three months later, she died. After the initial shock of knowing I had been given a possible death sentence, I prayed for the wisdom peace and perseverance to do God’s will, regardless as to whether the cancer would prove to be fatal or just an inconvenience. I can only say that from the moment of making this prayer, I have experienced profound times of peace and the thought of cancer has never troubled me at all. I could not imagine being able to live in peace with this knowledge without faith

I have never once prayed for healing, at the age of 65, the prayer for healing seemed too complicated to me. We all die at some point, and I just accept this.

I understand what you are saying…the suffering is telling me that something is wrong. I get that 200%, which supports that I feel like I need to change my path or find something that I can correct. That is where I get lost… So if I am suffering and I pray “Jesus I trust in you” what am I supposed to “do”? There are choices that have to be made or maybe the choice is to change nothing. I am a pretty tough cookie, but this 13 years is wearing me down…

Example: a woman in an abusive marriage, she can pray “Jesus I trust in you” but she could interpret things anyway that she wants…stay in the abusive relationship or leave in the relationship. It is still her decision to make with her free will…God will not force her to do one thing or another.
