I like St. Rose of Lima. She seems very austere and difficult to relate to. I wonder if there are any sites that have a biography of her that reveal her human side. My priest warned me that plenty of saints biographies have been greatly exaggerated. I heard St. Augustine’s biography is reliable. I actually like Saint Rose of Lima a lot, but she does not feel like a real person. She is very psychologically complex. Maybe it is hypersensitivity and excessive penances that make her feel un-real.

Most of the saint websites I know (like this one) tend to be pretty sparse in terms of biographical details. I guess it’s either a little info about a lot of saints or a lot of info about a few saints.

Here is what they have on St. Rose of Lima:

saints.sqpn.com/saint-rose-of-lima/

They do have a list of books toward the bottom, so perhaps those would make good resources for obtaining more information.

Pax Christi!

Hagiography iinterests me, as well. I’d love to find other sites besides www.sqpn.com (although I use it often).

Thanks for starting this thread.

God bless.

I would not say Rose was hypersensitive, but her penances are formidable. This behavior is something of a mystery to us mere mortals, but I suspect it is a unique grace given to not a great number of even canonized saints. It reflects a very great love for Christ, a zeal for souls, and a burning desire to imitate Christ and be united to Him in his sufferings, as well as, purge away anything of the body that could separate one from being completely united to Christ.

I’m currently reading a great book about her from Tan books written by Sr. Mary Alphonsus, O.S.S.R.

She is kind of a spiritual sister to St. Catherine of Siena who is one of my closest friends in Heaven and a prayer warrior for me.

God Bless!

Thank you so much.

I downloaded Alban Butler’s “The Lives of the Fathers, Martyrs, and Principal Saints” for January, February, and March on Kindle (free). It was written in the 1700s, though, obviously does not include saints like St. Bernadette or St. Maximilian Kolbe.

St. Benedict press has a book called:
A Year with the Saints…Daily Meditations with the Holy Ones of God

Includes, Scriptures. passages, bios, and a reflection.
Check it out. I just bought copies fro all my Confirmation Catechists. I believe it’s on special right now…
