Following Derrida’s book on ‘truth in painting’- I am interested to hear opinions.
Can a painting (or other art work) be true or untrue (not as a quasi-photograph, but as a work of art)? Can we look at one painting and say, “this is honest”, and another and say “this is a lie?” The same question applies to music. Music (and painting) is in a sense a statement (or is it?). Is it subject to the criteria of truth and falsehood.
Can poetry be true or false? Instinctively, I (and others, I assume) feel a reaction “this is true”, or “this rings false” to a poem.
What is the criteria?
Is art a language?
