Which do you prefer?

If the truth made you uncomfortable, would you “not” want to hear it?

The truth about what?

If it’s the truth about whether my bum’s too big or my nose too crooked, then you can keep it to yourself, and in return I will keep to myself the truth that you’re too short or bald or whatever.

Eternal truths almost always involve a degree of discomfort for me, as my delusions of being independent, in control and self-made tend to be at stake. But those I would rather know and be uncomfortable with than not.

I’ve found that if the Truth makes us uncomfortable, it’s because there’s something wrong with us, not the Truth. We are called on to change ourselves, not the Truth.

In my experience if the truth doesnt make you feel uncomfortable than its not the truth

The Truth is very uncomfortable. That’s probably why Jesus said the following…

Matthew 10:34 - “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the world. No, I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. I came to set sons against their fathers, daughters agains their mothers … a man’s worst enemies will be the members of his own family.”

Luke 12:49 - “I came to set the earth on fire, and how I wish it were already kindled.”

Luke 12:51 - “Do you suppose I came to bring peace to the world? No, not peace, but division.”

This isn’t because the Truth is inherently uncomfortable. It’s because the faithful find it comforting, while the unfaithful find it disturbing.

who’s truth? what is truth? who decides what is true and what isn’t? lots of people say things are true and they contradict each other so who is right? i think, if we could, we would choose truth, but it is impossible to know, FOR SURE, what the truth is. it comes down to faith. you believe something is true. i believe something different is true. we both try to convince the other that we have the truth and blame the other’s desire for “comfort” on them not accepting our version of what is true.

i would love truth no matter how uncomfortable (i think and hope), the problem is, there is no objective way to know truth for sure.

Hi Bengal Fan,

I believe you can know what absolute truth is. God certainly has a plan for us on earth and it would make no sense to place us here on earth without allowing us to communicate with Him.

We can prayer to God to know what truth is. A loving God will answer a sincere, heartfelt prayer and provide a way that we can know, without a doubt, that the communication received is from Him.

I know because it has happened to me.

Respectfully,

The Ethiops say that their gods are flat-nosed and black.
While the Thracians say that theirs have blue eyes and red hair.
Yet if cattle or horses or lions had hands and could draw
And could sculpture like men, then the horses would draw their gods
Like horses, and cattle like cattle, and each would then shape
Bodies of gods in the likeness, each kind, of its own.

The gods did not reveal, from the beginning,
All things to us; but in the course of time,
Through seeking we may learn, and know things better…
These things are, we conjecture, like the truth.
But as for certain truth, no man has known it,
Nor will he know it; neither of the gods,
Nor yet of all the things of which I speak.
And even if by chance he were to utter
The final truth, he would himself not know it:
For all is but a woven web of guesses.

i appreciate your response and there is no way to argue with your personal experience (and i am not here to do that anyway), but i would like to point out that if i asked the same question of certain members of other faiths, they would say the same thing and would conclude that God revealed Himself to them through (insert any other faith besides Christianity here). do you see my point? i do believe that personal experience plays a HUGE role in what we perceive as “objective” truth. the problem is, there is no way to prove it (either in a legal sense or a scientific sense) so we cannot be so bold as to say that we, 100%, know for sure, have the 1 and only corner on truth. i believe in the tenets of Christianity mind you, i just don’t think we can say that truth has been proven and only the simple minded or those who are consumed by “comfort” deny this easily identifiable truth.

I once heard it said, “Truth is revealed, not proven.” Hmmm… think there’s any truth in that? 🙂

Comfort, however, is entirely subjective/relative.

Truth + Comfort are not necessarily mutually exclusive.
