Trying to decide about spiritual direction

After years of wanting spiritual direction, I’ve discovered that the Fransican Friars of the Immaculate just a hour drive south of me offer it. One of my friends is driving down once a month for to get spiritual direction for a hour.

Now, I’m afraid to call… I am scared of opening up and showing a priest I admire how very worldly and lost I am. I don’t think I’m worthy of it, and I’m afraid I would be wasting the time of a spiritual director.

I’m just wondering–is spiritual direction universally helpful? Would someone like me benefit from it?

Who am I? I’m just a homeschooling mom with a shallow prayer life. I’m very busy in the home but also very distracted by the world.
 
If you have been trying, moved, or thinking about trying to grow in the spiritual life, and if you have been feeling a strong urge to seek direction, especially when you pray, if you seem to be on a threshhold or turning point, or if you are discerning a change in spirituality, mode of living, vocation, apostolate etc. you need spiritual direction. If you are struggling with something that is holding you back that could be rooted in sin or unhealthy attachments you need a spiritual director who is also a priest who can be your regular confessor.

Until then, pick up Spiritual Passages by Fr. Groeschel for a "panorama view"of the spiritual life and growth.

Don’t be afraid. Priest don’t live in a vacuum where they don’t understand the human condition. Pray for a good director, and the Lord Jesus will provide you with one.

Many people tried to give me books i asked them if it was Jesus who wanted me to have them and in the end I went to a monastry and there I asked Jesus to give me someone out of all the books, to help me follow the way He wished me to live. I found this book called “A retreat with St Therese” the little flower. I never knew her and now I have never looked back. I love the little way.
Jesus is the way ask Him.

Sounds like God just dropped it in your lap. When that happens, I usually go for it, whatever it is. If it doesn’t work out, it’s not like a cellular phone contract you can’t get out of! 😉

Our Good Lord Jesus once told St. Faustina that having a spiritual director is one of the greatest grace that He bestows upon a soul and that many ask for it but only few receive it.

If we have the desire to seek spiritual direction through a spiritual director, it is because God puts that desire in our hearts and wants us to grow closer to Him so that we will not follow our own will but instead follow God’s will through our spiritual director.

Sometimes we may have this temptation that we should give up having a spiritual director because we may be wasting his time but we should not give in to this temptation because the adversary always tries to find ways to keep us away from God and His guidance.

We can never stop growing in our relationship and love for God and our neighbor. I think it was St. Teresa of Avila who once said that we know we are in trouble when we think we cannot grow in our relationship with God…God bless!

Thanks for that,I have been having some very deep (I think) spiritual things happen to me and it seems that I am able to relate and change when asked by our LOrd and I wish to become exactly what He wishes. Mnay miraculous happenings occure in my life and I thank God for these that build up my faith.
My wife and I are used on many occasionsby our Lord, lastly when we went to the home town of my parents and some family. It is always beautiful to be used by Him but I can’t say I have ever had a spiritual director.

Maybe I am missing something Idon’t know.

God, in His Infinite Wisdom, draws us and guides us in different ways to Him. It is our openness to His most Holy Will and doing what He is asking us to do in each and every moment of our lives that matters the most.

Let us continue to allow Our Good God to mold us like a potter molds a clay so that we may be truly transformed in Him and that we may continue share the love of Christ to others and bring them closer to Him. God bless!

I think I will call tomorrow and inquire. I guess if God doesn’t want it, he will make it plain to me. I’m very nervous about making the call, though. :o

My goodness - to see this has been such a blessing this day!! I have been under spiritual attack this very Holy Thursday to the point of tears. I had emailed my spiritual director to see if she could talk me through this. Having found her was truly God’s work and huge blessing. It is reassuring to hear that it is God’s gift to me. I have been searching for what God’s will is for me and what I should do next.

Show me the path I should walk, for to you I entrust my life (Ps. 143: 8)

Your words were a nod that I am where I should be right now and I that I should be comforted the God is seeking me as well.
