trying to find God

he everyone i came on here to find help finding my faith. i was raised catholic but after serving in the military i grew apart from god. i try hard to put my faith in him but am unable to. the military made me a see to believe type of guy and now everyone i talk to about this says just look around god is everywhere, but still id like to get close to him but inside i still feel lost. any tips?
 
Hi, maybe you need to do what I did, keep searching for Him. Just talk nornally to God. Tell Him he’s very silent as far as you can tell, so okay, but ''help me find You." Anything like "Power of Goodness and Love (or God) I can’t find You, please ‘find’ Yourself to me. "You can think about it and people can talk about it, but in your deepest self you need to patiently keep reaching out for Him, telling Him exactly how it is for you. The important thing is to be honest, simple, patient, and authentic with God. He took His time with me, and I refused to kid myself, but He surprised me finally one day, quite unexpectedly.

You could take the first step and go to Confession, simply telling the priest how it is with you, and perhaps go to Mass, trusting God to reach into that practical nature of yours In His own time.
As a practical person who’s had an overdose of hard reality, you probably need to be as patient with yourself as with God.
 
Well, a good place to start is always the scriptures. I would say to start by reading the Gospel of Matthew, maybe one or two chapters at a time. Before you begin reading though, ask God to help you and tell Him that you are seeking to know Him better. Then, read and be patient. The Gospels may or may not strike you as particularly interesting, but do your best to try and discover who Jesus really is and what he teaches. After all, how can you be close to God when you do not know anything about Him?

Mark 9:24 “Lord, I believe; help thou my unbelief.”

Many of the great saints have been where you are. I have heard personal testimonies from people who weren’t sure of the existance of God in a real sense, but were moved to pray that God would reveal Himself if He really existed.

Some months ago our piest invited us to make the following prayer: “God, please do everything in Your Power to get my soul to Heaven.” That is giving God persission of your own free will to do whatever it takes. You would have to rescind that just as formally to over-ride it.

The best person to help you is Mary. Her role is to bring Jesus to mankind. Ask her to take over in your life and lead you to a better knowledge and love for Her Son.

Have you read or heard Fr John Corapi’s conversion story? He started with one Hail Mary a day, he didn’t want to go overboard.

As an ex-military man he may appeal to you. Here is someone who had ‘everything’ the world could offer in a material sense and he had to lose it all before he discovered true wealth.

Read the Word of God, then read the Word some more. These are the very words of God speaking to all of us. If you want to get closer to God, drawl closer to Him.

Start with Psalm 119, its long, but powerful.

Psalm 23
A psalm of David.
The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

He makes me lie down in green pastures,
He leads me beside quiet waters,

He restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness
for His name’s sake.

Even though I walk
through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for You are with me;
our rod and your staff,
they comfort me.

5 You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.

6 Surely goodness and love will follow me
all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD
forever.
 
A good place to start would be Eucharistic Adoration. Find out if your local parish(es) offer Adoration. And then, go and sit before the Lord. You can talk with Him… or sit, silently… and see what He might wish to say to you.

I also agree with the suggestion to get to Confession… and start attending Holy Mass again. Receive the Sacraments as often as possible.
