First off, Let me say hi to everyone that hasn’t got a chance to see my post at “meet and greet”.

I am married with two children. I live in Pa where my father is from but my mother is from Seattle and Whidbey Island. She was raised strict Catholic. She raised her children Catholic.

My wife and I have been painfully dealing with my daughter since about August of 2011. She is 22 now. She is very beautiful and bright young lady but for some reason around the age of 20-21 I noticed she was getting desperate for a relationship with a guy. I think it was mostly due to peer pressure. I talked to her about it, gave her some advice and let it go.

Last summer (2011) she met a guy. We thought she met him for the first time at a local event but found out later she had been talking to him online before they met. She started a relationship with him and it quickly turned into an obsession. She started breaking some of the house rules. We talked to her about them but as she continued to push the envelope the talks became more aggressive then level headed (yes I’m at fault just as much as her).

Finally in September she broke the no sleeping together rule of the house by bundling up in a sleeping bag out in our yard and not coming in till the next morning. It pretty much came to a head that night with a huge argument with her telling us she should be able to sleep with whomever she wanted. After being up all night we called the church and sought help. We went that morning as a family and talked to our priest and a sister (Nun). He spoke with us and with her by himself in length and told us that he felt that we were doing everything possible and that she was making horrible decisions.

We had figured that she wanted to move in with him for about a month before the big blow up in September (remember she just met him in the summer). She confirmed that’s what she wanted and we expressed our disagreement with it. We did not tell her she was prevented from doing so (If she was 16 again we would’ve). She continued to see this guy all winter and our life’s where miserable. Finally in late February I was able to sit down with her and ask her why she was so miserable. She stated that she still wanted to move in with him. We then told her that if she was waiting on us to change our minds on living together and not being married she would be waiting a very long time. She said that since we weren’t going to change our stance on that she was moving out.

She moved out toward the end of March. We went 5 weeks without seeing her. She finally came back for a visit this weekend. The guy is from the area also. They live 3 hours away from here. His Father and Step-Mother live about 4 miles from us. My Daughter and him got in here around 3am Friday night. We had to ask for a hug and they went and slept in the study (with the door open). They where up and gone to his parents before we where awake Saturday morning. She had told her brother she’d be back early afternoon to do something with him. She didn’t show. He’s 18 around and around 5pm he was getting upset because she made him wait all afternoon and didn’t show. He tracked her down at one of her friend’s house and informed her he was doing something with a friend of his or his GF. She got upset with him. She nagged him on his cell till around 6:30pm and he agreed to go out and do something with her and him.

Now, by this time I was pretty upset. Not only did she blow her brother off who still lives at home (graduates HS this year) but her mother was quite upset that she couldn’t take 5 minutes away from his parents or the one friend to see her on Saturday. We had left Saturday open because we knew she was coming home. I sent her a not so nice text explaining this. She told us then that she was planning on visiting us Sunday afternoon but not till after she ate lunch with someone and she also told she had to leave early. Well she came Sunday around 2pm and she had to leave before 5pm. In the short time she allowed for us she had to visit her Grandfather, Grandmother, Aunt, Niece and Nephew. Plus she needed us to Fill out her FASFA. Before she left though I told her I was done being a doormat. She needed to get her morals and her priorities set straight. I asked her how she could prioritize his parents and a friend (People that never came out and checked on her when she was recovering from a bad car accident or when we found out last summer that she has an auto immune disease) over her own parents. She didn’t really have an answer. She left around 5pm.

I’m getting really close to not wanting a relationship with her anymore. Because of the things I typed and because of the things I didn’t type, (figured this rant was long enough) and it’s tearing me and her mother up.

What we put up with and the pain we felt all came back with her this weekend (In our eyes, her actions didn’t help). We haven’t stopped missing her, in fact, its’s been pretty rough but the house has been so peacful since shes moved out.

Any opinions or Ideas would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to ask whatever. I have nothing to hide as id love more than anything to be able to move past all this, no matter what. She has chosen her life and I’m happy that she’s happy. But, if she can’t even come back home and not do something to make us feel pain and anger then I’m at the end of my tolerance of my daughter’s actions and that thought alone isn’t helping either.

She wasn’t like this until she met him. She was very strong in her Faith and not a wreckless or hurtful person.

Thanks for listening.

Our Father, which art in Heaven
Hollowed be thy name
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done
On earth as it is in Heaven

Give us this day, our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us

Lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil
Amen

Oh, my Jesus
Forgive us our sins
Save us from the fires of hell
And lead all souls to Heaven
Especially those in most need of thy mercy
Amen

Hail Mary, full of grace
The Lord is with thee
Blessed art thou amongst women
And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus

Holy Mary, Mother of God
Pray for us sinners
Now and at the hour of our deaths
Amen

Glory be to The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be
World without end
Amen

(Sigh) Been there. One of my daughters became involved with a man who was abusive, she was in her mid 20s at the time she had gone back to college after a failed relationship and then bumped into this “Old Friend” the next 5 years were an absolute nightmare. I sought help through the church, I went to counseling, advised her to go to counseling, I did a lot of praying and a lot of crying. She moved in with him shortly after they ran into each other, she has 3 children with him. I’ve been called out at night due to their fights, this went on as I said for years, and the police department was always on the man’s side, actually made my daughter leave the home in the middle of winter with small babies. My daughter was the sole provider, the man did not work. If he beat her, she couldn’t go to work, she lost her job. Shortly after they were evicted, they stayed here with me on a temporary basis. He became abusive and I had to have him legally evicted. She went back to him. She left him off and on over the years and one day the left the state. Our relationship had soured, I didn’t hear from her in months, she ended up in a shelter with the kids. She went back to him again! Finally one day we had to rescue her and the children from a mobile home in another state. One of my sons who lived in that state went and picked her up and drove her to my home kids and all. She stayed with me almost two years that time, in the interim I continued to pray for her and the kids, and their father. His father passed away while my daughter and children lived with me. I believe he had an eye opening experience. My daughter started contact with him. He came and picked her up about 6 months ago. I wasn’t happy about it, but she’s an adult and I have no legal right to keep her. He came and apologized to me, and thanked me for taking care of his family. I didn’t believe him, and I was angry, he had hurt my daughter and the kids for years, but as we talked further I could see he was genuinely sorry. He seemed to be at peace. He stopped drinking too. He really has changed. My daughter is well, she’s happy. The kids are happy, he’s working, he’s taking care of the family. They are still not married, but I’m praying on it.
Pray for your daughter, she’s an adult, but also pray for her partner. It’s tough to see when you have raised your children with Christian Values and they make ill-suited decisions. But they are finding their way in life, and sometimes they will stumble. Trust that the foundation you laid is in tact. I would recommend you maintain communication for her safety sake. Sometimes I just wanted to shake my daughter and scream, but I had to allow her to make her own mistakes, otherwise if I was judgmental, she would not call me. Understand that your daughter may be under this man’s influence, but if she thinks she loves him and his parents are more accepting, she’s going to lean toward them. Love them, pray for them, trust that they will “see the light”. I would suggest to not help with money. I made the fatal mistake of helping with rent, car payments, etc. I stopped doing that and it seemed to actually make things better. I don’t have a success story yet, but I have a relationship with my daughter and she is working towards amending things. She has enrolled the youngest in the church’s pre-school, so there’s good things happening. I have learned to be patient and less condemning and more forgiving and most of loving–though I never accepted the way her boyfriend mistreated her. A parent’s love should be unconditional. Doesn’t mean you have to accept disrespect or casual disregard, but try to remember what it’s like to be 20 years old and in love-- I hope you realize you’re not alone. God Bless you and best of luck.

Hi wirespider,

I am so sorry you are going through this with your daughter. I agree with the poster just above, that you should not provide your daughter with money or anything else. You could also set boundaries about her visits, she is playing you and putting you last under everything else in her life. She is flipping you the middle finger, in effect. She is in control of when she sees you. It may seem a game, but next time she mentions coming by, tell her that you will be out of town, and if possible, GO out of town. Take the family to a nearby resort or attraction and have FUN! Forget her and the problems. Do not beg her for time, do not entreat her for attention. Do NOT allow her to set your son up for disappointment. That’s a really crummy thing to do - she’s not being a nice person all around right now.

Pray for her, but don’t let her abuse you. I know that the FAFSA is for financial aid for college - I hope you aren’t going to pay for her education. She wants to play adult, she should pay adult.

I’m sorry for your pain.
Please think of the parable of the prodigal son. She needs to know that she is loved, even as you remind her you think living together is a mistake.

IMHO, I would welcome them into your home but under your rules (no shared bed)
Also, have you connected with his parents?

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle,
be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil;
may God rebuke him, we humbly pray and do thou,
O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan and all evil spirits who wander through the world for the ruin of souls.

Amen.

My prayers for you both and for your daughter.
I pray God will help you through this time with wisdom and resilience.

I am sorry you are going through all this. Please do not close the door on her. You love her and I am sure she loves you. You and your wife will have to bear with this for the time being but I am sure with God’s help, there will be reconciliation.

You mentioned that she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease last summer. Could that affected her behaviour. Is she on steroids? Is she in pain?

God bless you and your family.

At 22, it’s not like she’s extremely young for a sexual relationship. You might not agree with it, but she is an adult who can make her own decisions. As for the other stuff (blowing off her brother and not spending time with her mother), yes that’s rude and insensitive, but we all make mistakes and do immature things, especially while still in our twenties. She also might be upset at how you’re treating her in the face of this relationship. In her mind, and in the minds of many people her world, you’re being unreasonable by having a “no sex” rule for a 22-year-old. Saying that you’re not sure whether or not you still want a relationship with her because of these things is a bit strong, and if you give her that vibe, then she’s probably going to drift farther away. If you want to keep your daughter in your life, then you might have to just agree to disagree in regard to this relationship. Respect that she’s old enough to date who she wants.

To Et Cetera,

“At 22, it’s not like she’s extremely young for a sexual relationship. You might not agree with it, but she is an adult who can make her own decisions. In her mind, and in the minds of many people her world, you’re being unreasonable by having a “no sex” rule for a 22-year-old”

I never said she was too young for a sexual relationship. I clearly stated that I’m against my unmarried daughter having sex in my house. Also I did concede the fact that shes an adult and I’m happy thats shes happy…

You clearly misread my whole post.

TheRealJuliane, thank you for your reply. Your reply mirrors my thoughts on what to do next. I’m just so confused (probably emotionally dazed would explain it better) right now that I need the reassurance of others of my faith that I’m thinking right. It will be hard though as I love her so much and Ive spent most of the winter trying to teach some tough love without any luck.

Thank You.

God Bless,

W.

I’m sorry for your pain.

Thank you tarboy for reply.

She has always known that she is loved. Even in My darkest hour (as I’m not the greatest at communicating with a level head once my temper has bested me) I’ve always told her I love her.

We did start letting him stay the night probably around November but not in the same bed. The big fight in September was about this very same thing. She broke the house rule “you don’t sleep together overnight at our house”. This is what she has been the most upset about from the beginning even though she was a devout Catholic and her Christian values where very high. She had a I Love Jesus license plate on her car.

Well maybe not so confused. I’m able to get some information from reliable sources. So, I know he had came off a very sexual active relationship before he met my daughter. The girl he was seeing cheated on him then dumped him.

About the parents, well Ive asked much about them but didn’t get much. They are not well known in this small area. What I was able to learn on my own is; his parents are divorced and for some reason at one time the mother had a restraining order against the father. The father was in another relationship after divorcing my daughters bf mother and was talking marriage, until he got a woman around 20 years younger than him pregnant. He then married her. My daughters bf used to live with his mother but for a reason not proved yet, moved in with his step mom and Father. His step mom is around 30 and his Father is around 50. So, no we have not met any of his parents. Biological or Step. I don’t even know where his real mother is.

Thank you and God Bless,

W.

Amen…

The Prayer to Saint Michael. In my eyes a very good prayer in a time like this.

Thank you and God Bless…

I am sorry you are going through all this. Please do not close the door on her. You love her and I am sure she loves you. You and your wife will have to bear with this for the time being but I am sure with God’s help, there will be reconciliation.

You mentioned that she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease last summer. Could that affected her behaviour. Is she on steroids? Is she in pain?

Thank you serverus for your reply. I will admit that yesterday it was real hard not to close that door. Today seems a tad better.

We went to every family doctor, hematologist and hematologist appointments with her and they gave no indication that she would change her behavior. Although it was hard on all (especially her) awaiting the test results to come back from the specialists. Thanks to God that her doctors describe it as a stable form of Leukopenia (low white blood cells) and not anything worse. I pray that it only gets better.

They did do the steroid regiment just to see if they could use it if it was necessary. It did raise her blood count which was good news. The better news is that she seems to be fighting off sinus infections and thing like that with normal antibiotics from her family doctor with no need of steroids.

Also, thanks to God, she doesn’t suffer any pain. There really is no symptoms other than the low blood count. I think she only has to see her Hematologist who is also an Oncologist once a year now, unless something comes up. We are blessed with great doctors.

Thank you and God Bless.

You said her relationship with this guy “quickly turned into an obsession” but you didn’t give any details on that.
I’m curious to know, for the sake of better understanding the situation…where is she showing actual obsessive behavior in her relationship with him?
Well I actually went to a Psychiatrist (has his MD and 14 years of study) in September to see where I might be lacking as a listener or communicator. Yes i am quick to confront, Yes I am very forward and yes I could listen better. I do work on these things. I only went twice as he said I didn’t need to reschedule…During those visits he became very interested in her habits and gave me some literature to read over.

In it was a something called obsessive love (I think). I have it around somewhere and will get back to you with better details if you need it but it soon became clear to me that this relationship might fall into this “obsession”. There where different parts to it and i believe she and him fit into one of the parts that was unhealthily. By the time I asked them to read the literature they seemed to fit into like the second or third stage of it. I only asked them to read it, not sure if they did but they disagreed with it and that was fine as I went to a Dr to see if I could better myself.

Examples of what i remember; She was very quick to start a relationship with him after meeting once at a local event without care of whether they even where compatible. He seemed to dictate everything she did and he monitored it by texting or phoning her every half hour or less and within that half hour she would text or call him. She was class valedictorian with over a hundred friends. In a months time she might of had 1 or 2 left because he either didn’t like them or did something rude to her Friends and then she had to choose. That leads me to another sad fact…She has burnt so many bridges with good people…

There is more but its almost one big blur of one thing after another and not just with the obsession part but with everything else I have explained.

Thank you DaddyGirl for your time and interest.

God bless

W.
