Trying to fully understand who Mary is

But how is that not praying to her?
Catholics use a lot of verbal shorthand when we talk about certain things. I might say I prayed to Mary instead of the longer “I asked Mary for her intercession” or we may say a person “got an annulment” instead of the more precise language that the person “was granted a decree of nullity” (I’m not 100% sure that phrasing is exactly right but it’s better). The shorthand can be misleading to people who don’t have a working knowledge of this, and don’t know that when the Church uses certain words those words have a specific meaning; opening Webster’s dictionary will likely reinforce misunderstanding. The faith tradition you came from uses words a certain way and so does the Catholic church. You can rely on the fact that once you learn what the Catholic Church means that it isn’t going to change. Latin is a dead language and those words of art will stay the same.
