Trying To Locate a Passage

I attended mass Saturday 12/29. One of the readings talked about honoring your father. I didn’t catch where the reading was from because they didn’t do what was in the missal. What I can tell you is this; part of the reading talked about honoring your father, “even if his mind fails”.

Does this sound familiar?

I contacted my parish and asked. The two readings were John Ch. 3 v1-2 & v21-24
Samuel Ch. 1 v20-22 & v24-28

But it isn’t what they read during the Mass.

I believe what you heard were one of the optional readings for the Feast of the Holy Family. This is surely the case if you went to Mass on the evening of the 29th, which would have been the vigil Mass for the Feast of the Holy Family on Sunday the 30th.

You probably heard the reading from the book of Sirach, Chapter 3.

***God sets a father in honor over his children;
a mother’s authority he confirms over her sons.
Whoever honors his father atones for sins,
and preserves himself from them.
When he prays, he is heard;
he stores up riches who reveres his mother.
Whoever honors his father is gladdened by children,
and, when he prays, is heard.
Whoever reveres his father will live a long life;
he who obeys his father brings comfort to his mother.

My son, take care of your father when he is old;
grieve him not as long as he lives.
Even if his mind fail, be considerate of him;
revile him not all the days of his life;
kindness to a father will not be forgotten,
firmly planted against the debt of your sins

There were options for this Mass. The above is what we used but when I checked my I-Missal it just had the other first reading about Samuel. They had both in the misselette. Ihad the privilege of reading the Sirach.
