I have had experiences with alcohol throughout my whole life, which has caused me bad, i am currently addicted to it but on a minor scale, i am addicted to a few beers per day, nothing major, and i am able to function in the mornings and days, however, how do i completely quit it for good? would going to church more help me,? the eucharist perhaps??what should i do to quit for good, because its quite frankily getting boring, and repetitive and bad for my health

In addition to spiritual measures, I’d highly recommend AA and counseling. I’m a recovering addict (also “minor” compared to some) and I’m so glad I got help before it got worse. Addiction has physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual components, and it should be attacked on all fronts for the greatest chance of success. You need to learn new, healthy ways to cope and retrain your brain to not feel the intense need for alcohol. A support system is really important for this to work. Please let other people help and pray for you!

God bless.

Have you considered a support group, like Alcoholics Anonymous?

The way that you quit is to make the decision to quit. Get rid of any beer you have in the house. Do something else during the time you would have been drinking beer. Join a gym and work out. Start a new habit. Go to the library and read up on something. Go to mass daily and ask God to help you. Sign up for adoration if your church has it. Hang around with sober friends, not ones that will encourage you to fall back into drinking.

May Gid bless you and guide you. 🙂

Thanks ifishmok the Irish seem to have the best words of advice, I’m going to do all of that , I have joined AA before but I seriously can’t commit this time I feel like the problem is so minor now that it’s a sheer matter of will power and filling the time. In all honesty I feel like it’s a matter of me being idle , in Christ and in life. When one has nothing to do all day the alcohol becomes an activity a way to kill a few hours and that is all I need to fix. Appreciate the support

People I know have used lots of different methods to quit: some have gone to Church more attending as often as possible even daily to receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion, Alcoholics Anonymous, , accountability partner, cold turkey (if not drinking too much with doctor approval as withdrawal may need medical supervision so always check with a doctor.) Maybe try several or all of these and search the web.

Good luck overcoming this addiction. May God grant you the graces needed to do so.

God Bless,

Mary.

If you think it is not a serious problem, I think that sheer willpower and keeping busy may actually work for you then. I agree that having nothing to do can lead to over doing, be it alcohol, sweets, tv, Internet usage, or exercise. Get busy and you won’t have time for bad habits.

Pray and God will give you the grace. It does get old, cut back smaller and smaller, keep praying. Don’t go cold turkey. Put your energy in something else.

Praying for you.

Besides AA (I’m in another 12 Step program & it does work - if you work it!), ask Venerable Matt Talbot for prayers.

If you are asking, it sounds like it’s a problem, small as it may be. I’d recommend quitting completely, because half measures just tempt you more.

You are in my prayers.

As Bonnie suggested ask for help from Ven. Matt Talbot. You have received a lot of good advice.

I’ve known people have had success with A.A., including friends and family members, but I’ve also read some of the Orange Papers and Recovering from Recovery. There are dangers in any group meeting, such as gossip and abuse. Very vulnerable people are in these meetings with people who are forced by a Judge to attend. I don’t agree with everything I read at the Orange papers, but then again, I’m not an expert.

Also, I have a family member warn me that when a person on illicit drugs quits cold-turkey, they often feel horrible but their bodies begin to heal. For some habitual drinkers, quitting cold-turkey can cause heart and other health problems. You may want to seek a doctor’s evaluation.

I have seen with my own eyes a person go through the ‘shakes’. It’s frightening.

Now, you might not be that far down the road of alcoholism, but I think this is information you might need to be aware.

God Bless you and I believe you are being led to something better in and for your life!
