I wasn’t sure what forum to address, but I figured this might be the one, since spirituality usually implies reading and understanding stories that have an essence of transcendance and love within them.
I’m trying to track down a story I heard years ago. I read the story, and I think it was true, but I’m not sure. But it was so long ago, any google search I try, just can’t seem to find it.
I’m going to give the general story line in a moment, but the reason I’m trying to track it down, is because it completely changed my understand of love and I want to be able to share it with others. But I can’t, because I don’t have the original.
So the story goes
supposedly true story). The VERY short version:
Germany, Nazi camps.
Jewish doctor escapes the gas chambers due to his skills. He doesn’t have a great deal of faith at all(If I remember he was originally an athiest). He attends to Germans of high “standing”…and is constantly given threats, if you do not save this generals life, you die.
He is guarded at all times strictly and is a very very skilled doctor.
He continues to save the very men who send his own countrymen to the gas chambers. It is one of the most appalling situations because he has a commitment to save all human life, even the enemy. In this situation he actually “finds” god and gains faith.
He is lovely. He is very nice. His guards begin to warm to him. Eventually they grow to love him. They all do even while they threaten him with death if he doesn’t save the high ranking german officials.
When the War looks like it has been lost by Germany a command is given within this camp that all remaining Jews must die.
One guard is given the task of killing this particular doctor and the doctor knows the command has been given. If the guard does not kill the doctor the guard will be killed.
The guard prepares a needle and goes to inject it but cannot. He starts crying and breaks down completely. He can’t kill the doctor.
The Jewish doctor moves the guards hand and places the needle over his own vein and say’s, it’s okay. I accept it with love.
The doctor would rather die than have his friend, the guard die.
That’s the gist.
It is the VERY short version and does not encompass the story at all. It was really a story about breaking all boundaries of love, and that ultimately the Jew, was willing to give his life to the nazi…in an act of love and it crushed hate…as though hate was a fly on the wall. THE most astounding story…
But I can’t find it again. Has anyone EVER heard this? It may have been a fable or nonsense…but it just seemed too humble of a story to not be real.
Anyway, this is a sort of a last ditch effort to find this story. If you are aware of this please let me know. Thanks!!
here’s hoping.
Cheers
