Trying to understand the order of Mass

I am curious as to why things are done in Mass for most of the time and at other times it is not done, if that makes sense lol

Take Gloria for example. The Missal says it is to be said except on Sundays of Advent, Ash Wednesday and Sundays of Lent.

Why the change?
 
Some of the other members of CAF will be able to explain in better than me, I’m sure.

But I’ll try. During Lent, we are preparing ourselves for the crucifixion of Christ, we are to be solemn and introspective. To sing the Gloria during Lent would be counterproductive to the mood and intent of this season in the Church. We are not suppose to be praising and celebrating Christ as we do during Advent or in the Ordinary time in the Church year.
 
The mass changes depending on the purpose of the mass, seasons of the year (liturgical seasons), etc. During the times you mentioned we sing the Kyrie instead (which is basically the latin version of ‘Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy’). There are times of the year when certain songs change, mass settings, colors, vestments, etc. And then there are certain masses when certain parts of the mass is omitted for other parts. For instance, the Creed can be omitted during a baptismal mass, or certain special masses when we repeat the baptismal promises.

It may take you a while to learn everything, but don’t fret. I know some lifelong catholics that still don’t know all the mass parts and why and when they’re done (including myself). But if you stick with it long enough, it will become second nature. Stick with it. 😃 👍

Short answer, we don’t rejoice during days of penance. Advent is traditionally like Lent, a time of prayer, fasting and waiting for Christ. In the case of Advent we are waiting for Christ to come into the world, in the case of Lent we are waiting for his resurrection.

That makes perfect sense. I am so thankful that I will be experiencing Holy Week. I see why God made the truth clear to me at the time it was revealed. Holy Week, Pope Francis, a move in where I live to have a place to place down roots and find a parish.
