Hello! I am new here and just joined the Catholic Church this week. I will be attending RCIA classes this fall. My question is this, I had a tubal 6 years ago after the birth of my 3rd child. Then, a noncatholic, a non issue. Now, a big issue. Although it was partly for my health (I have PCOS) I also did not want more children. I feel guilty about it now that its taboo in the Catholic Church. What ars your thoughts? Also, that makes sex now purely fore pleasure and unity? I welcome your feedback and thoughts.

Since you were Protestant at the time, you should simply say to the Lord, “I’m sorry. I didn’t understand. I understand now. Please forgive me.” When it’s time to make your confession before you come into the church fully, mention the tubal ligation. You feel guilty because you have received Light and Grace and you understand now. But God knows your heart. You simply need to approach the marital embrace with the attitude of, “If God chooses to send me a baby in spite of my tubal ligation (and it has happened before), then I fully accept his Will and will raise the child lovingly.”

Your heart is in the right place. Confess the sin, seek forgiveness and be at peace. And welcome home!

There’s no need to feel guilt. Since you do feel some guilt, you can include it in the confession you make as part of the RCIA process (although your confessor may disregard it as an non-issue anyway)…or if you are not yet baptised, your baptism washes away all prior sins (again, if this is even a sin in your case).

Also, the Church does not require a reversal. You are free to have loving, unitive sex with your husband. It may not be open to life (though as noted it is possible), but you are not deliberately frustrating the marriage act so there’s nothing wrong with it.

And yes, welcome home.

Welcome to the Church! Discuss the tubal ligation during confession- it will probably rid you of your guilt. I suppose if it is reversible you could always try to have that done as well. Some women have gotten pregnant despite tubal ligations so just be open to life and if you have it reversed then I recommend looking into NFP to be able to achieve or postpone pregnancy.

Nevertheless, welcome! 🙂

I also had a ligation before conversion. After my separation and subsequent divorce I did choose to have a reversal even though the Church does not require it. I think sometimes I need to take an extra step towards God to feel right - even though it is not required. I am glad I did it. I am still waiting on my decree of nullity but I am hopeful that someday should dating and remarriage ever be in my future that children will be as well.
