Fact Check: Obama-Biden Removed At Least 14,000 Mailboxes

CLAIM: President Donald Trump is trying to rig the 2020 election by removing mailboxes so people can’t vote by mail.

VERDICT: FALSE. The removal — and replacement — of mailboxes is a constant part of U.S. Postal Service operations.

Democrats are trying to claim that President Trump is crippling the U.S. Postal Service because he opposes universal vote by mail, and that the removal of mailboxes in several locations throughout the country is evidence of that evil intention.

Former Vice President Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic Party nominee for president, gave credence to that conspiracy theory on Saturday: “I wonder if you’re outside trying to hold down your mailboxes. They’re going around literally with tractor trailers picking up mailboxes. You oughta go online and check out what they’re doing in Oregon. I mean, it’s bizarre!” he said.

But there is nothing nefarious about removing mailboxes: Biden did it himself.

More specifically, the Obama-Biden administration removed 14,000 mailboxes over the five fiscal years ending in 2017, according to the U.S. Postal Service Inspector General.

More were likely removed before that. In 2009, cost-cutting was urgent at the postal service, with the postmaster general considering reducing delivery to five or even three days per week. . .

The main article you posted notes that a lot of those removed mailboxes were returned. These removals do seem to be permanent though, at least from what USPS is saying, so maybe it isn’t comparable:

Mail sorting machines are also being removed at the locations where they sort mail, which will also impede the counting of mail-in ballots, so it isn’t enough to explain away the mail boxes:

I don’t really care who wins the election, but in light of Trump’s comments regarding USPS and mail-in voting, I’m sure his administration is aware that they can probably cut off some votes from the Democratic Party by impeding mail-in voting.

President Obama was in charge when 14,000 mailboxes were removed. It is normal procedure and it was slated months ago which boxes get removed or replaced.

This is a CONSPIRACY theory.

From ARTICLE…
The notion that Trump is not funding the USPS is not true. The Trump administration agreed on July 29 to loan the USPS “$10 billion in emergency coronavirus relief funding,” The Washington Post reported, adding that the money is “a crucial injection of cash that postal officials say will keep the debt-laden agency solvent for at least another year.
The Government Accountability Office (GAO) reported in May that “while USPS is to be self-sustaining, it lost about $78 billion from fiscal years 2007 through 2019 due primarily to declining mail volumes and increased costs.”
This should surprise no one because everything is online.

Who is the Head of the Post Office.? He is a businessman who knows how business works.
The Wall Street Journal Editorial Board noted that “DeJoy built a trucking company from 10 employees in 1983 to almost 7,000 in 2014” and that after he sold the company to XPO Logistics he stayed on “as CEO of that company’s North America supply-chain business.”
The states have been warned by the post office because it takes time.
“Some of these USPS letters ‘warning’ states that mail-in ballots might not be counted are because some states’ laws permit ‘voters to request a ballot as late as 4 days before the election’,” Bier wrote. “FOUR DAYS. It’s no wonder they are warning them. This is not new.” In another tweet, Bier wrote: “In Ohio, a voter may request by mail a mail-in ballot all the way up until THREE DAYS before the election. Then officials have to mail that ballot to the voter, then the voter must get it postmarked by election day! No wonder the USPS is ‘warning’ states!”
They regularly replace mailboxes and trucks do break down. Jamie Lee Curtis tweeted this(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

I would think most/many have seen a mailtruck being towed. Just conspiracy theory. :ringer_planet: The main concern is fraud. We see states mailing out ballots to dead people or people who have moved out of state so the chance for fraud is higher.

Dunno anything about mail sorting machines, but I can tell anyone who will listen that a lot of mailboxes have been taken out of service over the last decade. They weren’t taken out for reasons the progressives are thinking now, they were taken out due to increased vandalism and break-ins.

Take the mailbox in my grandmother’s neighborhood. Three blocks from her house, how convenient. But starting in the 2000’s, there were increasing numbers of incidents of vandalism and break-ins at that box. People’s checks for paying their bills were getting stolen. Well heck, it is a nice neighborhood, there will be (or used to be) lots of checks in that box. So about ten years ago, the local post office stopped collecting from that box and locked it up, then about six years ago, they removed the box entirely. That same post office even locks down the drive up mailbox just outside their facility after 5pm and doesn’t open it again until 9am.

Repeat this story all over the country. Mailbox theft is like “porch piracy” in that it is just too dang easy. Not to mention most bill paying is now online so people do not mail as many things as they used to. Hence even without the vandalism/break-in problem, the volume of mail is so low as to be not worth sending a vehicle and a driver to pick it up.

But suddenly it’s a conspiracy? Whoa, whoa, whoa! Have you checked out mailbox thievery and vandalism in your neighborhoods? I haven’t trusted a mailbox in at least ten years. I don’t have much mail to send so I drop it off at the local PO where I live. Pain in the neck, but that’s what it takes to protect the mail these days.

Social Security checks are all direct deposited according to Tucker Carlson and this has been since 2013 so yes mail volume is way down everywhere except maybe Amazon and Ebay packages

The issue is not about the post office handling ballots, it is about states which allow absentee ballots up to three days before the elction so it is difficult to process quickly and fraud which becomes a major concern.when states mail out all ballots…

This.

Plus nearly every employer now requires employees to provide their direct deposit information for paychecks. Takes a waiver now in most companies for someone with no bank account to receive a paper check.

Many unemployment and social welfare programs pay benefits via debit cards or direct deposit.

But somehow that got forgotten too.

Yes, everything is basically done through direct deposit, same with bills. Who today does not pay their bills online, very few I would imagine. If it weren’t for a few magazines, and packages, the post office would be out of business.

Trump gave the post office “a loan” of 10 billion on July 29 in relief funding so that should keep them going through the election cycle.

https://www.dailysignal.com/2020/08...ebunking-10-myths-about-the-us-postal-service

many boxes were taken off the streets or locked down because it was really easy to put duct tape on a string and “fish” out mail. carriers are even robbed of their special mailbox key.

in 2 Florida counties, using duct-tape and shoestrings, thieves have stolen more than $400,000 from blue collection mailboxes over the last three years, according to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service. (2018)

The Post Office is not a for-profit business. It is an essential service, like the military. How much money did the military lose last year?

The head of the Post Office is a long-time Trump donor and ardent supporter. His interests are in serving his boss, the President - not in serving the people. Right now his boss is most interested in undermining the Post Office so as to undermine participation in the election, for he knows that the only way he can win is to suppress the vote.
The states have been warned by the post office because it takes time.
In the past, the Post Office has done its best to meet or exceed their normal delivery standards to accommodate an election. It happens every election - not just this one. But this time it seems the Post Office is simply sitting back and resting on its “warnings,” making no special effort to ramp up delivery, even though a record number of mail-in ballots are expected.
Can we all agree that social security checks get direct deposited?
Medicines delivered to veterans are not directly deposited. They come through the mail. It is an essential service. It has been since the founding of the nation.

There are other venues. I get most of my clothes online. They don’t use the post office.

Those other services are not guaranteed by the Constitution. They do not do nearly as much volume as the USPS, even if you added all the other services together. And they charge more. A lot more, especially for letters.
