Tuesday of the Fourteenth Week in Ordinary Time

Reading 1
Hos 8:4-7, 11-13
Thus says the LORD:
They made kings in Israel, but not by my authority;
they established princes, but without my approval.
With their silver and gold they made
idols for themselves, to their own destruction.
Cast away your calf, O Samaria!
my wrath is kindled against them;
How long will they be unable to attain
innocence in Israel?
The work of an artisan,
no god at all,
Destined for the flames—
such is the calf of Samaria!
When they sow the wind,
they shall reap the whirlwind;
The stalk of grain that forms no ear
can yield no flour;
Even if it could,
strangers would swallow it.
When Ephraim made many altars to expiate sin,
his altars became occasions of sin.
Though I write for him my many ordinances,
they are considered as a stranger’s.
Though they offer sacrifice,
immolate flesh and eat it,
the LORD is not pleased with them.
He shall still remember their guilt
and punish their sins;
they shall return to Egypt.

Mt 9:32-38
Gospel
A demoniac who could not speak was brought to Jesus,
and when the demon was driven out the mute man spoke.
The crowds were amazed and said,
“Nothing like this has ever been seen in Israel.”
But the Pharisees said,
“He drives out demons by the prince of demons.”
Jesus went around to all the towns and villages,
teaching in their synagogues,
proclaiming the Gospel of the Kingdom,
and curing every disease and illness.
At the sight of the crowds, his heart was moved with pity for them
because they were troubled and abandoned,
like sheep without a shepherd.
Then he said to his disciples,
"The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few;
so ask the master of the harvest
to send out laborers for his harvest."

God is angry (for the 100th time
) against the Israelites for chasing after false gods and for setting up kings when He wanted to be their king. In this passage His anger is not turned away by their sacrifices. In Psalms the idols of wood and gold are exposed for what thye are - totally worthless to help anyone. Nowadays the same could be said of money and material possessions which are universally regarded (apparently) as something to center your life around… but are worthless (except when they help us to help others…)
I love the psg about how Jesus looks at the crowd with pity because they are abandoned and lke a sheep without a shepherd…
i sometimes have compassion on sinners…
but then sometimes i just want them to get their just desserts and go to… uh… well, anyhow… but there is some serious evil in the world that is hard to “forgive”… but i somewhat digress…
In any case, that’s why the people in this psg are like sheep… they see in Jesus a shepherd… someone with answers…
These are the ones who are searching for God and want to do something about their evil inclinations… not just accept it as “human nature” or whatever… Otherwise they wouldn’t have been following Jesus and listening to Him… would have been out partying instead… or like the Pharisees criticizing Jesus & how He violates the Sabbath by curing people and that kind of thing… 
never could u/stand people criticizing Jesus after all He had done… but then… i guess its human nature to find fault…
Jesus says the laborers are few… Yes… There don’t seem to be many people running around trying to get people everywhere to love and follow Jesus… I don’t do enough myself…
… i always tend to think i have good reasons for doing this or avoiding doing that… but God knows… He sees things differently than we do… hmmm…

hmm… that’s interesting…
This confirms another psg… where Jesus says we must become like little children, who are (presumably) innocent… in order to get into Heaven. seems like an impossible thing to become innocent as we once were… but with God…
