Turn the other cheek meaning

Luke 6

29 If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone takes your cloak, do not withhold your tunic as well.

I understand that turning the other cheek means attempt to reconcile rather than return the evil by slapping him back. Does that sound right?
 
Not necessarily attempt to reconcile, but do not do evil to another because of an evil they have done to you. That only results in further harming yourself.

God will take care of the just reprisals for evils committed against you, leave it to Him and pray for your offenders. Easier said than done >_>

Also, bear in mind that this is a further development of the understanding of what constitutes moral reprisals. In the ancient world, there were pretty much no limits, and no governing ideology behind how to handle crimes committed against you. In the OT era, it became “An eye for an eye,” which is actually a limitation, not a command. It placed a limit on what you could do to a person who harmed you. If he cut out your eye, the absolute worst you could do to him would be to cut out his. You cannot take any further reprisals against him.

Then, in the NT, we get this. Do not take reprisals, that is not your job, it is God’s.
