Turning back toward the alter?

I had this discussion with some of our parishioners about when is it appropriate to turn one’s back toward the alter. My thought is that if the priest has declared the mass over and one turns their back to look at the choir who is in the balcony sing and perhaps sing along with them, it is ok but now I am wondering…please clarify…God Bless.

It’s appropriate to turn your back to the altar when you are leaving Mass; when you walk back to your pew after receiving Eucharist; when you are shaking hands during the sign of peace.

It used to be taught when you were serving that you never turn your back against the crucifix/tabernacle. It didn’t mean you couldn’t walk away from the altar, but turn in such a way that you don’t look like you’re turning your back. So if you’re on the Gospel side, you turn right before you walk back and if you’re on the Epistle side, you turn left. I suppose if you’re in the congregation, you can do the same. Not required, though.
