Has anyone watched this?

My wife and I started watching solely because of Rainn Wilson. The first couple of episodes didn’t sell me but we kept watching. About half-way through I thought it really hit its stride.

We were severely disappointed to hear that it was cancelled and are going to miss watching it. It was one of the few things we watch on t.v.

My wife and I watched the first couple episodes also solely because of Rainn Wilson. But, we lost interest and haven’t kept up with it. :o It’s good to hear that it hit is stride. Most shows seem to need a bit of time to really start firing on all cylinders. But, alas, we are a fickle and impatient people.

I think it was aiming for the void left by “House” Where you have a flawed sharp tongued and addict “hero”

And we started watching it because we loved house and we love Rainn Wilson. I have a completely opposite view of it than you do. I thought the first couple episodes were the better ones and then they really started to “get preachy” or miss the mark entirely. Then, the unthinkable happened. Rainn became just about the worst actor I have ever seen. I think it started with bad writing but then he just seemed to oversell his lines. For a few episodes I did not know if he was being serious or sarcastic. Then it hit me, it was serious. I think this show really damaged his reputation. The very last episode of the season he seemed to pull a rabbit out of the hat and deliver a very good monologue at the AA meeting. Though why his doctor was there seemed odd if you know anything about AA. 🤷
I feel that the writers really missed some golden opportunities.
  1. His brother should have ended up being his son.
  2. His “I’m you” shtick could have been done better so that it became a catch phrase instead of an odd almost OCD aspect.
  3. Of course I don’t appreciate the political preaching or the attacks on Christianity… but it is hard to hide from that these days (I am looking at you “Bones”)
  4. The storyline with his ex seemed to go nowhere.
  5. I think this is an example of trying to throw too many things against the wall and see what sticks. Family relationships, solving crimes, personal lives… It was too much.
I am glad it got canceled because sometimes you just don’t want to see the train wreck when someone you like is on it. Sadly, I don’t think Rainn will ever recover from this in a serious acting role. Comedy may be his forte. But he has definitely taken a hit. And the writers should have been taken out and shot… Metaphorically of course.

I completely disagree with your assessment that it got better later. It got worse, way worse. It is just that you, like me, probably wanted it to get better…

Since it was cancelled, I won’t be seeing it. :)🙂

But weak writing seems to be the bane of current-day television. The writers blew it bad on “Resurrection,” for instance.
