Irresponsible because…? I have relatives that had 21 total, 17 are living. I know other families who have 8, 10 and 13 kids.
The kids from the families of 10 and 13 are adults and doing well. The family with 8 (and counting 
) love children and are good parents. What’s the problem?

Man, are we going to start again about the “the Duggars are awesome for being open to life” v. “the Duggar children are mindless drones who are sucking up our resources”?
Because, seriously, I’ve read that article like twenty billion times.
But this is CF, so this will end up with people citing God on both sides … and we’re Catholic - as one of my non-Catholic friends says, “Catholics loooooooove babies!”

That’s a good point lol
I like the show, my husband really despises it. He said…‘when did real, everyday life become entertainment?’ (He grew up as one of nine kids, so to him, he doesn’t see how these shows are entertaining)
He said…taking the kids to the zoo, to the grocery store…cooking dinner…like is this really considered “entertainment” now? He’s just upset that his mom and dad could have had their own show, born in the wrong era I guess.

I feel bad for Jon. He puts up with a lot. It seems like it always falls for him to solve the little messes of the day because the kids go wild and Kate panics. Meanwhile, he just takes everything in stride…

It doesn’t matter if you’re debt free. What matters is your annual salary. The average child costs anywhere from 10 to 20 thousand dollars a year (source: babycenter.com). 16 kids would require a moderate 6-figure salary, which not many people take home. It’s fiscally irresponsible to have 16 kids on a 80000 dollar salary.

Yes, but is babycenter.com considering retail prices for things such as clothing? The Duggars DO NOT pay retail prices. They make their own laundry soap, buy bulk food, and wear second-hand clothes and shoes. In their ‘budget’ episode, they paid roughly $30 for almost 30 pairs of shoes. I’d be curious to see how much each Duggar child ‘costs’ per year. Baby center probably factors in transportation, heating and cooling and all of that which is consumed anyway. Yes, the Duggars may use more resources overall, but per capita, they use fewer resources. That is to say, that if everyone lived according to the Duggar’s way of life, overall, we’d all use fewer resources.

My children do not cost 10 to 20 thousand dollars a year. That is one of the craziest things I have ever heard! What are they buying kids to have them cost that much…please. The problem is people want to have everything, they don’t realize that children will be perfectly happy without every new toy and without expensive clothes and shoes! You know what, we adults can be just as happy with out those things too. What a terrible reason to not have more children…I need more stuff or I’ll only buy the very best of everything. Buy used and save the difference!!

The claim that it costs 10 to 20k/year to raise a child isn’t widely accepted. Many consider it laughable.
My issue with families like this isn’t the finances, its the love: I know a family with 14 kids, and they all turned out well enough, but the parents were pretty neglectful, and the kids essentially raised each other. They are grown now, and none have over 4 kids, most only 2. They didn’t try to recreate their own childhoods…

My maths textbook (Algebra 1) says that a USA Today study says that raising a child from infancy to age 17 (or 18 years) is on average 160000. Simple math here, folks. Take 160000 divided by 18 years and you get 8888 dollars a year. Plain and simple, having many kids on a low budget is simply irresponsible.

What in the world does that last line mean?
The HUGE flaw in your logic is that you applied the AVERAGE amount spent per American child and applied it to large families. Large families develop economies of scale that would boggle your mind if you’ve never experienced it. In other words, the average American parent overspends on their kids. When you can’t afford to, you don’t.
I too have a friend that came from a family of 13 kids. Their childhood wasn’t perfect, but neither was mine in a family of 3. Most of those kids have college degrees (they were caddies and then Evans Scholars) and are doing well. A couple aren’t. In short they are a microcosm of America. But they grew up living on today’s equivalent of under $80k a year.

My family loves Jon & Kate + 8. Maybe it’s because some of their family members resemble us in a way. My mom is exactly like Kate in almost every way! My little sister is also exactly like Mady. We even call each other whatever name we’re closest to. My little sister even calls our dog “Joel” sometimes by the way she stares off into the kitchen.
I think the family is pretty average (at least for having a camera crew in their house half the time). I’ve seen a lot of nice and not-so-nice things being said about them on different websites. Yes, Kate may seem like she’s snippy, but I think TLC just likes to show the drama of family life (i.e., Mady’s temper tantrums almost every episode). Kate’s also trying to get everyone ready on time for whatever event they’re going to (my mom does the same thing!). They do get private family time, too, so we’re not really seeing everything that goes on.
They’ve also moved into their new house, too (a $1.3 million dollar house - paid for by TLC, I think. The film crew probably needs space, too.). At first glance, it probably seems excessive, but 50 acres is hard to come by in the big cities area (2 acres would cost you $1.3 million here easily!). They also have a seperate garage, and a few other buildings (horse ranch/barn). BTW, I think it was the Duggars that built a really huge house (bigger than Jon & Kate’s).
I’m pretty sure 100-150 years ago, a house of their size (the one they just moved away from) would be fine (and people usually moved out and got married around 14-16 years of age), but then again, most people don’t have 6 kids all at once. Plus, Cara and Mady need a decent bedroom (their’s is a 1 foot high wall, and is connected to another bedroom - probably not the best when all of the kids hit the teenage years.). 2 bathrooms are going to be pretty hard when 8 kids have after school activities (like sports) and all need to head to the showers at once. The new house, I’ve read, has 7 bathrooms.
I wonder if they’re getting ready to close out the show. Since they have their new house, I’m pretty sure they want privacy.

Kate said in one of the early Q&A episodes that she didn’t want the show to be (to paraphrase) “fluffy, feel good, everyone behaves and gets along” all the time. (I think the Duggars are like that - I haven’t seen many episodes, but everyone is always friendly, polite, and orderly). Jon & Kate + 8 shows family life in its’ good and less than perfect moments. I think it balances out the Duggars just fine. True, there’s a lot of crying and screaming, but you have 6 little kids that are all the same age compared to a familiy like the Duggars (of which I’m pretty sure they each have their own little play groups). I (and my family) actually find it adorable.
They’ve had a few marathons recently. The 4-5pm slot usually airs reruns of the Monday night shows. They used to have 3 or 4 new episodes each night (unless they were reruns that I haven’t seen yet). Now, they’re 1 30-60 minute episode per week.While I think its a nice show…better than most out there…But has TLC gone Jon & Kate + 8 crazy? I mean its on all the time!
