I knew a family with 11 kids. They lived in a modest 4 bedroom, 1 bathroom house. The mother stayed home and the father made a very modest living (no where near $80K a year). And yet, they managed just fine and were never in debt throughout their marriage (thus far). All the older kids have been to college (some even for masters and doctoral studies) and I imagine the younger ones will do the same.It doesn’t matter if you’re debt free. What matters is your annual salary. The average child costs anywhere from 10 to 20 thousand dollars a year (source: babycenter.com). 16 kids would require a moderate 6-figure salary, which not many people take home. It’s fiscally irresponsible to have 16 kids on a 80000 dollar salary.
I think people vastly overestimate how much a child has to cost. When you can buy peanut butter in 5 gallon buckets, it tends to reduce the cost per capita.
