It doesn’t matter if you’re debt free. What matters is your annual salary. The average child costs anywhere from 10 to 20 thousand dollars a year (source: babycenter.com). 16 kids would require a moderate 6-figure salary, which not many people take home. It’s fiscally irresponsible to have 16 kids on a 80000 dollar salary.
I knew a family with 11 kids. They lived in a modest 4 bedroom, 1 bathroom house. The mother stayed home and the father made a very modest living (no where near $80K a year). And yet, they managed just fine and were never in debt throughout their marriage (thus far). All the older kids have been to college (some even for masters and doctoral studies) and I imagine the younger ones will do the same.

I think people vastly overestimate how much a child has to cost. When you can buy peanut butter in 5 gallon buckets, it tends to reduce the cost per capita. 😉

Other then the fact that 5 gallon bucket of peanut butter probably has samonella in it and even if it doesn’t you can’t send anything to school with it on it because most schools don’t allow peanut butter anymore. 😉

Indeed. This was probably 20 years ago, so I’m not sure if they do that anymore. 🙂

They’ve also moved into their new house, too (a $1.3 million dollar house - paid for by TLC, I think. The film crew probably needs space, too.). At first glance, it probably seems excessive, but 50 acres is hard to come by in the big cities area (2 acres would cost you $1.3 million here easily!). They also have a seperate garage, and a few other buildings (horse ranch/barn). BTW, I think it was the Duggars that built a really huge house (bigger than Jon & Kate’s).

.
I didn’t know they bought a new house, has it been on the show yet?

Well, I think that’s cool for them that TLC bought them a nice house. Heck, their show has become a huge hit and TLC is raking in quite a bit of dough and I’m glad to see they’re getting a good chunk of the pie too. Good for them! 🙂

What!?! My kids take PB&J sandwiches to school for lunch all the time. What nonsense is this?

If you look on the TLC show schedule, you’ll see it. It only shows episodes two weeks in advanced (minus the 3rd week), however, you can see the 3rd week if you know the number sequence in the URL. i.e., currently, Feb. 5th doesn’t show (since today is the 15th), but if you change this part date=20090204.035 to this date=20090205.036, you’ll see the 5th.

I don’t think schools can serve peanut butter, and if there is someone in school with a severe peanut allergy, they’ll ask you not to send in peanut butter. This is because for someone with a severe enough allergy, sitting next to a peanut butter and jelly sandwich can cause their lungs to close up.

I was never in school with somebody that allergic, but my brother was. While it isn’t necessarily common, it isn’t terribly unusual in the bigger schools, either.

Due to the fear of peanut allergies most of the schools in my area (and in many school systems) do not allow any peanut products at all. Some of the ones that allow peanut products require kids that do to sit at special tables and stuff like that.

I think many schools and school systems have implemented such rules (or are moving in that direction), but not all of them have. In more heavily populated areas, it makes more sense. And, if a kid is going to school that has peanut allergies, it also makes sense that they would do this.

It’s odd. When I was in school (not that long ago ;)), I’d never heard of anyone with severe peanut allergies. Now, it seems I keep hearing about them. 🤷

Same here. It seems like an epidemic now.

It is odd. There was a girl in my grade at elem. school (this would have been 1985 or so) with a peanut allergy, and if her skin came in contact with peanut butter she would develop hives in that spot, but at least half of the class ate PB&J for lunch on a given day, and I don’t remember her having any problems being in the classroom when we were eating. And she was the only kid I knew with that allergy.

The difference between the Duggars’ parenting style and Jon & Kate is that the Duggars have the older children help out with the youngest children. Each of the older children are assigned chores and a younger child to help. Jon works as an IT and Kate, at times, is alone with 6 kids the same age. The majority of the work falls on Kate’s shoulders. She is very organized and very tired. I know she would like more help from Jon, but he has worked all week and is tired on the weekends as well. I know Kate has some problems with any kind of mess, but we all have our idiosyncrisies. I’m sure if I spent all day in the laundry room with stain removers, trying to get outfits clean, I would be cranky, too. I think that Kate needs to address Jon in a more loving manner and Jon needs to be more emotionally supportive of Kate. I think there are times when he could diffuse the situation, but he contributes to it instead, which makes Kate even more frustrated.

There are times when they are talking on the couch, when she turns to him seeking affirmation and he ignores her. She is a strong woman. If she weren’t, she would have gone crazy by now.😃 I know she can be tough and a little quirky, but I like her.
She should express her wants and needs in a more loving manner, but I guess every show needs a villain.😦

About the peanut allergy thing. My sisters school asked not to send peanut products to school. They used to have peanut free tables in the Cafw anyone with out peanut products were ewlcome to sit at but some parent were complaining that it isolated thier kids and made them feel “different” So they banned all peanut products from the lunchroom.

A less attractive couple I have yet to see, and I am not talking about their looks

I watched a few episodes this morning - including the one where the twins took a cooking class.

I simply could not believe it when one tried cooking something at home (a cake) and Kate told her that it was not good and threw it out. Mean mom!

She just rubs me the wrong way…

Hehe. That reminds me of when I was a kid and I ‘helped’ mom make cinnimon rolls. Cinnimon - cumin: what’s the difference?
😃 😃 😃
