TV: Mad Men

This is my first season watching this show, and even I can tell that Pete is just creepy.

I ma enjoying it for the most part, but I don’t know the backgrounds of people from previous seasons, and that makes it a little confusing some times.
 
Last night’s episode. Wow. So much happened, and I was tearing up by the end.
 
Loved Peggy going out on her own, but wonder what if Don will try to woo her back? And now do you see what I mean about the red head? Unfortunately she’s an opportunist–pimped to get the money and the partnership that she doesn’t deserve. A good time for Peggy to leave.

And what’s going to happen to the firm? Lane’s embezzled money and he’s not going to get credit for $50,000 for the Jaguar account. Wonder who will sniff him out?

Had a lot of respect for Don too for not agreeing with that fiasco. Don’t know what’s going to happen between him and Meg, but good for her for asserting her dream to be an actress although that doesn’t seem to be panning out and i think she’s a little frustrated.

Maybe what will happen is she will either go back to modeling or maybe some TV commercials? Don seems to be a nicer guy at times, hope this marriage works out for him.
 
In some ways, I like Joan.

I’m not sure I got the two takes on Don’s visit to her apt: did she actually go through with it or not?

Lane told her how to get what she needed so I can imagine her coming to his rescue. She’ll befriend Don and Lane if and when the time comes. Peter is despicable. Pete implied that it was agreeable to Joan and Sterling backed off with his protest. He might come after Pete when he finds out it wasn’t her idea.

Yes, she deserved partnership after 13 years of managing the office for their financial gain. She’ll probably end up running the place or controlling it and that could happen if she married the Sterling character who is the father of her son.

Peggy will come back. She’ll make a big splash elsewhere, they’ll hire her and make her head of the LA office.

Ed, you made your point a couple of pages ago. Let those who enjoy the show, which many people find has artistic value, discuss it here. There’s no reason to rain on their parade.

And guarantee none of those men want to see her in a tent dress. Which I don’t think were sold at this time. A few years later, I believe.

This is true. Her clothes are figure hugging, but there is never any inappropriate skin showing at the office. It’s going to be interesting to see how the character’s style of dress changes as the show gets into the late 60s.
 
So, what does everyone think of the finale? Don at the bar in the last scene…

I love this show. I can’t wait for it to come back. Seriously, how are we supposed to wait?
 
I loved the finale of Mad Men. I think Don is now having second thoughts with his wife beginning commercials. I think that the girl talking to him looked very much like Meg’s girlfriend!

It should be an interesting show next season,but doesn’t start probably till February or March or later (darn). Don seems to be getting a little more mellower. Not sorry to see Lane go, but horrible that he hung himself.

Pete seems to be in love with that guy’s wife. Sorry, I still think he’s a little weasel. Hope Peggy comes back but she seems to be doing well on her own.

Can’t wait too for the next season.

I thought the Season Finale stunk. All I could say was “That’s It!?”:bigyikes:

Joan selling her body for money, Lane hanging himself, Peggy quitting the firm…all could have been Season endings that would have me on my seat pining for next season. However they gave a filler show that really did nothing for me. No shockers, Boooooring!

I waited a year and I got a really good Season only to get the most anti-climatic Season finale. 😦

I am sorry to see Lane go, I liked the Limey and he beat the crud out of that horse’s behind Pete Campbell…which was funny because the first half of the Season I really was starting to sympathize with Pete, because he was stuck in Don’s old world…I actually was on Team Pete, but then when he decided to pimp Joan for a Jaguar deal, I went back to hating him (Vincent Kartheiser is really good with his character…you can love him and hate him all in one Season.)

I do hope Peggy comes back and she dump that loser commie, and I do hope I see more Don/Peggy friendship scenes as with Don/Joan. I really hope they don’t shut out Peggy like they did Betty in this season.

I’ll agree with you that the finale seemed more like a mid-season episode, but I don’t think it was bad. I guess the writers just chose to have two heavy hitting episodes and then a more mild finale. However, I think it was good for ending a fantastic season. It wrapped up the arc of the year, and set us up for next year. Now that Megan is becoming more dependent (more like Betty) Don is moving away from her. I mean, in those last five seconds I think we’re definitely meant to think that Don is about to tell those women at the bar that he is alone, and as far as we know, he has been faithful to Megan for this entire season.

And yeah, I’m going to miss Lane too. I feel for the guy as he did put a lot of time and resources into the company. Lane’s death and the obvious parallels to Adam’s death are really going to mess with Don, I think. It could be another reason that he might go back to his old ways. Pete still skeeves me out, but I liked his line about family being like a “temporary bandage on a permanent wound” as it seems to be a problem that many of the characters face. Everyone seems to be chasing temporary bandages.

Peggy is my favorite character next to Don, so I also hope that she is not phased out. I really don’t think that she will be. Peggy has very much been a focus of the show, and I think she will continue to be. I really think that a main story line is Peggy’s struggle in a patriarchal society. She’s too much of a main character, and I hope I’m not wrong. I was actually wondering if Lane’s death wouldn’t somehow cause her to come back to the agency, but I don’t think that will happen now as it probably would have been alluded to in the finale. Who knows?

I’m also interested to see where they take Megan’s character. It seems that she is really starting to fall prey to playing the character of “Don’s wife” and I don’t think Don enjoys this dependence, but once again I am not sure. I was disheartened to see her use her pull to get cast in the commercial when she told her good friend that she would try to help her get the part. It seems like the Mad Men world infects people.

I don’t think it was bad, but it certainly was flawed. I thought the episode should have ended with Don walking off the set…I thought “Perfect, what’s new for Don?” but then they drag out the boring montage scene and included John Slattery’s behind trippin acid :nope:
before they get to the bar scene where I’m like “Ok why hasn’t this ended, why am I still watching this…what’s with the montage? Is Matt Weiner gonna hold us up for another 2 years like before???”

Then they get to the bar scene and pull the Hank Moody where women are drawn to him like moths to fire, and pull the ‘excuse me mister, are you single cause me and my friend wanna help ruining your 2nd marriage.’

I was like “Oh sheeesh, now we’re going back to Don’s infidelity…so the whole season of Don’s fidelity was just pointless.” Talk about ZERO CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. Sorry but I hate it when shows retread old tracks with their shows, it shows me the writers have nowhere to go, and might as well just make Meghan the new Betty…BOOOORING! First of all Betty is a much better actor than Meghan…Meghan was hot but her spoiledness is just “Ugh can we switch to Pete’s sick obsession with his train partner’s wife? or Lane’s uber-creepy awkward flirting with Joan?”

I dunno I liked Meghan’s character, but now she’s starting to annoy me as much as the Bohemian beatnik mistress did. Meghan’s constant whining and faux ‘independence’ is just tiring…instead of Don cheating, why can’t he just keep this promising character development and just leave her? Why does it have to be Season 1 all over again with Meghan instead of Betty? 🤷
 
I think so too. Better not watch any of the so called news broadcasts then or the late night shows. I grew up in this era and until the “hippie generation” there was far less scandal then you would find today.
 
i really liked Mad Men the first season. i looked forward to the second season. i was disappointed with this season. i wish don draper would not have divorced. i dislike strongly the woman who plays his current wife. his ex wife was more believable. the current wife is all teeth!! everytime she opens her mouth to speak i just cringe. her lines are stupid.
i haven’t read all of the posts tonight. i will go back and read them at another time so i don’t know what others feel about this season.
not a lot of cohesiveness in the plot. it just jumps around too much for me and i don’t really like many of the characters anymore.
i was a teenager in the 60’s so i think the ony reason i watch it is too see things that remind me of that time.

I actually loved Meghan in the last season and the Zou Bisous Bisous, but then she started pouting…doing the whole wanna be femdom…but really ending up losing to Don…blah blah I’m a whiny spoiled brat…I want my dreeeeeeeeeam of being an actress, even though I can’t act.

It’s just :rolleyes: ugh with me now with Meghan…I really want Don to either go celibate or get back with Betty.

your post makes me laugh!!! you are right when you describe her as being pouty and whiny. yes, i am tired of her pursuit of wanting to get into acting. glad to know i am not the only one who feels that way about her. bad casting or bad writing of the dialogue or both!!! yes, betty would be better than megan any day. i broke my ankle last year so i think i missed a lot of mad men. i don’t remember megan until this year. whenever megan is on screen it is like someone dragging their fingernails across a chalkboard.
i certainly hope this role doesn’t go to her head because she is not a good actress.
i thought the suicide was a little lame too. then the next episode they barely dealt with it except don going to the dead man’s wife and giving her money. too bad, because with the right character development and good writing this could have been a really good show.
they had too much going on and never went anywhere with any of it. it seems the show would wander off with another character and you are wondering what happened as a result of one scene. guess i needs to read some posts and see if anyone else has the same opinion. i still think that the actor playing don draper was good casting.

very poor script development i think. not very coherent.
