Once again, The Unit has demonstrated a “mission” to bring religion back to TV.

This week (season premiere), one of the characters was reading the Holy Bible, looking for a name for her son.

This isn’t the first time that religion has been included in this show.

It’s never a big deal (except for one episode that featured religion as the side plot), but it’s there. A mention of God, a mention of church or prayer, a use of a “Christian” word (like adultery instead of “fooling around”).

That’s a great improvement over the shows that have expunged all mention of God and Church other than as swear words.

The show is also blatently pro-U.S.A. During the season premiere, one of the characters made a comment that made me gasp. I was waiting for the show to be suddenly zapped off the air and replaced with Will and Grace or some other PC show! Glory be, the show stayed on!

It’s a war show, so it’s not for everyone. But I recommend that you try it and if you like it, give it some support. If only all shows on network were like The Unit!

It isn’t so much that the show is on a mission for religion but that the writers have been able to write religion, though not a specific faith, is that they are marketing a product and they have determined through the use of polls or least reading the ones done about religion over the years that some demonstration of a belief in God is something that almost everyone has. Mrs. Brown, the character who was reading the Bible, was the one who had had a problem with religion last season because of the loss of a child. Plus, the events in “S.E.R.E.” influenced her to pray. I’m not trying to burst your bubble but pointing out that it’s TV and you have to be careful what you read into it.

This season the show so far (though with only one ep isn’t much of an indicator) has improved drastically since last season though that’s mainly because they were a midseason replacement and were worried about making it. Now they have much of the pressure off but still have to mee expectation.

The Unit is about the Army Rangers in Special Forces so it’s about the army and doing the missions and work that no one sees to keep America safe.

At least Ryan and Mamet are actually responding to the polls instead of just ignoring them like most of the other network shows.

I happen to know that Robert Patrick (Tom Ryan) is very interested in religion, talks about a “covenant marriage” to his wife, and after his experience in “Ladder 49,” spoke about converting to Catholicism. (I think he’s been too busy to get around to it; he did at least five movies last year, plus The Unit). He attends a Bible study at his local Harley Davidson store. (He says that the Bible study is lead by a “real righteous dude!”)

Of course, in a few weeks, his latest movie, “The Marine” will premiere, and he plays the most awful, disgusting villain! So much for a godly testimony! I hope after this movie, people don’t try to kill him as he walks down the street!

Shawn Ryan graduated from my kids’ school, BTW. We’re all very proud of him!

As sort of an off-topic comment, I see Robert Patrick and can remember when he was on X-Files as Agent Dogget and then the series premier of Stargate: Atlantis as a Marine Colonel. He tends to play similar characters. Though I didn’t know that he converted to Catholicism. Interesting.

Colonel Ryan: Ma’am. I don’t find this amusing. I find this downright hilarious. (And he says it with such a straight face:D ).

Robert Patrick hasn’t converted yet (that I’ve heard, anyway). We need to pray for him and his family.

Uh, I’d also like to point out that while God may be mentioned from time to time, some of the main characters were having an affair and two of the support characters have less than stellar morals.

Yes, BUT—the affair is NOT shown in a favorable way. BOTH of the people involved in the affair are miserable and it’s obviously their own fault. Col. Tom Ryan is in danger of losing his career and possibly even his life over this affair. Tiffany is in danger of losing her husband, children, and friends over the affair.

Both Tom and Tiffy try to break away, then come back, then try to break away, etc. Vicious circle. They’re wretched.

Watching this show is enough to scare you away from adultery forever! No one could get the idea that an affair is “glamourous” or “romantic.” Tom and Tiffy meet in a sleazy hotel to be together. They fight and argue and pick at each other. They hide and lie and sneak around and deceive their family and friends. It all looks so pathetic and horrible.

And BTW, on the show, it’s called “adultery,” not “messing around” or “having some fun.” The sin is given its Biblical name, adultery.

AND the finale of last season shows Tom getting married and renouncing the affair, and apparently, he has told his bride-to-be about his affair because she seems very aware of who and what Tiffy is and seems very determined to fight for her husband.

AND Tiffy and her husband apparently have reconciled, although I’m worried that it won’t last after seeing the season premiere.

Anyway, my point is, on this show, evil is evil and good is good. You can’t say that about a lot of other shows, where evil is presented as something good and desirable.

Hey, everyone, I’m not saying that the show is EWTN! But for a network show, it’s a pleasant change.

We like it here too – tho I had to say, the SERE episode was a little…undercooked. I dislike the main female character (the one holding the bible) b/c she’s so feminist at times and so “once an army wife, always an army wife, you’ll marry an army man, blah blah…” – I hope my child never marries or joins the military – I’ve been in, and I’m married to one, and I want a better life with less struggle for my kids – I am proud of my service, and I’m proud of my husband and his service, but I know the trials and fears involved, along with the real dangers and I want an easier life for them – they’ll make their own choices, and I’ll support them whatever they decide (within morality, of course) but I just hope their lives don’t involve the hardships that military living puts on people.

Anywho – LOL – sorry to go off on a tangent. I do like the pro-American way the characters are portrayed, the trials they face, and the closeness of the spouses – all true, and seldom seen by the public. I liked the show “Over There” for the same reasons – that one got cancelled and I figured The Unit would too…glad to see it’s back

Don’t get me wrong. I actually find the show entertaining but I wouldn’t say it’s a show of morals nor do I think that immorality is always portrayed in a bad light. For one, Tiffy begged her lover to come back to her and she’d leave her husband. The only reason, it seemed, that she went back to her husband is that she got dumped. Also, nobody addressed the fact that the two single characters are promiscuous and they talk about this fact. I think that this show tries to play to the widest audience as possible. I don’t think they’re trying to be a moral show. I think they’re trying to get the most viewers.

BTW, was anyone annoyed that they didn’t actually pick up from where they left off and that they almost totally ignored the shootout? I’m predicting that the head honcho leaves his now drug addict wife and tries to get Tiffy back since it didn’t work out and then Tiffy will play the “I’m going to be faithful to my spouse” character.

I agree that the adultery theme will pick up again, although in interviews, Robert Patrick has hinted that his character, Tom Ryan, will have some wonderful opportunities in Washington, D.C. open up because of the influence of his new wife.

The Robert Patrick fansites think that Tom Ryan’s new wife is a junkie. I’m wondering if he and she made a deal–he helps her stay off drugs, and she helps him advance in his career. The marriage is just a “marriage of convenience” with no love.

I do think that Tiffy’s husband, Max, will fight for her, and if he ever finds out about the affaird, Tom Ryan is a dead duck.

I know this will probably get ignored, but I’ll try anyway, since it’s the only TV show that I watch without fail.

The Unit is one of those shows that has super loyal fans, but most people in the country are either watching House or Dancing With The Stars. So there are only 10 million super loyal Unit fans.

Are any of you out there in CAF Land part of the 10 million? I hope.

I love this show, and I’ve been reading some of the television forums about it. But I would love to discuss it with people on CAF.

I think its an excellent show. The only trouble is its on so late. So early starts for work means a i miss a few episodes. I wish i never threw out my video recorder :o

We always watch NCIS, they truly have a bunch of ‘characters’ on there. Then my husband watches the Unit. I have been lately. I hope they find out who is outing them 😃 Sounds like a familiar term lately huh 🤷 Monday night is Journey Home on EWTN, then Friday night is Numbers.

Tuesday’s episode was amazing–a “stand up and cheer for true heroes” story! Even the music was heroic.

What brave, unselfish people! It was a picture of the Gospel of Christ–men and women willing to sacrifice themselves for people who didn’t even know or care that the members of the Unit and their families exist.

I can’t BELIEVE that Christians don’t watch this show!!! It’s incredible. It’s uplifting. It’s inspiring.

But as usual, Christians will ignore it and then it will go off the air, and Hollywood will have one more reason to say, “No one watches decent Christian shows, so that’s why we keep producing trash, because people watch it.”

That’s what happened with Christy. Remember Christy? Of course not. Christians didn’t watch* Christy*. Golly, what does it take?! Even the name “Christy” had Our Lord’s NAME–duh duh DUH! Do we need to be tied down in a chair to get the message when Hollywood decides to throw us a bone?!

When Hollywood DOES decide to let a truly good show with Christian principles sneak through and make it to network tv, we’d better jolly well watch it! If we don’t, then we have no right to complain when Hollywood cranks out garbage. Why should they produce “Christian” shows and shows with Christian values when NO ONE WATCHES!

Oh, pardon me–Christians are watching House, a great “Christian” show with “Christian” characters and “Christian” values that’s on at the same time as The Unit. Shucky darn, House even did a “prolife” episode–that’s PROVES it’s Christian, right! Great show for the WHOLE family, including the kids!

Riii-ght.

Or Christians are watching Dancing With the Stars, another “Christian” show, especially the modest costumes. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against dance. My daughter is the production manager of a ballet company.

But dancing vs. heroism–well, I guess the Bible has both. But instead of watching strangers dance, why not get involved with your town’s local dance studio and attend their recitals and competitions? Why does it have to be “stars?”

You know something–we’ll get more shows like House and Dancing because we’re asking for them. We’ll get what we support.

grrr.

what’s the premise of this show? i’ve tuned in a couple of times and it always seems to involve a bunch of housewives anxiously trading rumours about where their husbands are and what covert mission they’re involved in. once i tuned into what appeared to be a torture scene – and the protagonists were doing the torturing.

This show is based on a book about the Army’s elite Delta Force unit. It has been set in current times. It is a good show that shows that there is a home life for every military person even while they are deployed somewhere in harm’s way. Some episodes seem a little more like a soap opera but not so much since the first season. It balances out over the season with some shows more about the men on assignment with little flashes back home and some vice versa.

I’m excited about this season so far. The cliffhanger having the unit members on the run and being held from last season was excellent. I was disgusted that the boss’s snobby wife seemed to have sold the unit out for her own political and personal purposes. However, even with the occasional glitch, I think that this is one of the best-written shows on TV now.

Yay! Here’s the link:

I know this thread isn’t going to stretch on for ten pages or anything! But it’s good news to me.

Robert Patrick, one of the stars of the show (and my absolute favorite actor) was in Kuwait with three other stars from The Unit: Dennis Haysbert, Michael Irby, and Max Martini. Mr. Patrick is a member of the USO and arranged for The Unit cast members to go overseas and meet U.S. military men and women.

To me, this is the kind of thing that won’t be shouted from the housetops, and it’s a darn shame!!! We hear all about Britney Spears and her shenanigans, and who’s splitting up with who, and who’s having a baby by someone that she (or lately, he–have you heard the story about that man who is pregnant?) isn’t married to, and most of us just shake our heads and say “Who cares?”

But here’s an actor, not even a huge big star, but just a nice hard-working actor, who goes to the trouble of arranging this tour and making it happen, and it doesn’t get squat press from CNN or any other network or “star” magazine.

Think how many of those soldiers were thrilled to meet “the Terminator!” They probably saw him in the movie when they were kids. And Dennis Haysbert–I’ll bet a lot of those soldiers watched him on 24 a few years when he played the President.

What a nice, nice thing for the actors to do! And they had nothing to gain from it, nothing at all, except the knowledge that they were paying a visit to our troops.

I’m so glad their show was renewed! Last year, Regina Taylor (one of the Unit leads) won an Image Award for Best Actress, and in her acceptance speech, she commented that the cast of this show is a big family.

For those of you who have not watched The Unit, it is the first drama TV show in 40 years to feature an African American man and woman in the lead roles.

I hope that you will give it a look-see this fall. I realize that many of you are against war, and so is this show. It does not glorify war, but it shows the reality of war and makes us proud, not ashamed, of those people who do choose to serve their country in the military. Last season, the plot of the show had one of the unit members killed in action, and the funeral was really tough to watch. On one of the websites, real soldiers said that it was portrayed with extreme accuracy.

Not for little children, BTW, but a good show to watch with teenagers. It will give you good conversation topics.
