Pope Benedict posted his first tweet! Are you following him on Twitter? I loved getting a blessing-I hope he posts often.

Many anti-Catholics are at it on his Twitter page spouting nonsense and death threats.
This must be countered decisively.

I’m not much of a Tweet-er (although my wife says I’m tweet), and I don’t have a smart-phone (don’t want one yet due to privacy concerns), but was interested in following the Pope’s tweets on computer. I wonder if there’s any way to do so without having to read the vile remarks from others?

I tweeted him back:D

There are a lot of idiots on there, but that is the state of the world, and something the “new evangelization” is going to have to deal with.

Don’t have a twitter account - I just might sign up for one now

Such is Twitter. 🤷

It’s no different than any other communication medium, but instead of angry email-length comments on some website, you’re looking at furious Fortune Cookie-sized bits.

Yes! Just go to the site to read the tweets but do not click on “expand”.

And you don’t need a twitter account to just read his tweets.

Exactly, because Twitter’s character count in posts is regulated unlike in FaceBook.

Yes, exactly.

And as expected, immature messages will come out of those fortune cookies no matter who the public figure is. Just look at the flak politicians and pundits get from angry people on the internet.

I think the Pope is going to be okay if some angsty folks say some angry nonsense in their zeitgeist of a microblog. 🤷

The diversity of the Twitterers (?) following him is interesting.

Only problem is, the attacks on the Papal Twitter account tend to be a little worse than what we’d see from a typical Twitter account of other public figures.

It hurts me deeply to see the Tweets against the Pope. However, after thinking about it for a while, I’ve come to think that perhaps it could enlighten him regarding the hatred against him and the Church, so that he could formulate an “action plan” (for lack of a better phrase) to begin to build a bridge between Christians and atheists.

I have found an extremely nasty Twitter feed that is impersonating the Pope’s feed (I won’t post it here). They picked a username that is just a few characters off (and makes pontifex vulgar), are using the same display name/background/avatar, and they are replying to people who tweet the Pope. I read the parody account rules and they are definitley breaking all of them.

I am trying to figure out how to report the account, and Twitter is extremely lame in that they only allow the person being impersonated to report it (they specifically say they won’t take any action on a report coming from someone other than the person or their authorized representative).

Anybody here have a position that could plausibly fit into the following and be willing to report them?:

From Twitter’s impersonation reporting page:

"Your relationship to the impersonated:
  • I work directly for or with the impersonated party, e.g., co-worker or assistant.
  • I am an authorized representative, e.g., I work at a law firm, marketing or PR company."
I think being employed by the Catholic Church might qualify for the first. I can’t direct message @pontifex to inform them to make a report because you can’t message accounts that don’t follow you.

If anyone is willing to make a report that might actually get considered, message me and I’ll give you the details.

Nevermind. I tried everything I could to report them and Twitter makes it impossible to report impersonation unless the report comes from the Pope’s account. Which sucks because the account is breaking every single rule that Twitter says parody accounts must follow.

Color me unimpressed by Twitter at this point 😦 You can’t even report obvious rule-breakers.

Despite being very annoyed with Twitter’s impersonation reporting procedures, I will have to give them some credit: I see today that the scofflaw’s fake Pope account has been suspended!

Excellent. It was quite vile.
