Twice the “Eternal City”; Jerusalem, and “God’s house” The Temple were destroyed with God’s Blessing and apparent approval???

Could it happen again, say here in America? What could possibily provoke a Merciful, Just an Loving God to such an action?

Why has it not yet happened?

No.

Simply put, the USA is not “JerUSAlem.” The Holy Temple has never been here to be destroyed, whatever our local Zealots might twist scripture to say.

Punishment does happen!

Every graveyard on the planet is a testimony to the punishment of sin!
Why has it not yet happened?
Because it can’t happen here.

remember that when the Lord gave up the ghost, the tapestry of the tabernacle was torn.
That was the first sign of the end of the old covenant given to the Jews.

Since they, as a whole, (not all of them), further rejected and persecuted the saints, the temple was destroyed a second time.

Both times were for disobedience to God.

See Father Rutler re the Allied bombing of the churches in Rome. [Scroll down to end of article]
But the Vatican’s response through L’Osservatore Romano was arch:
These plaintive voices are understandable, but at the same time they bring to our minds the question, “did these churches fulfill the mission for which they were built by past generations?” Where are today the crowds which once filled them? The sad truth is that the greater part of these fine churches have been left empty lately, or at the best have been filled only for Sunday Mass, when the pleasure-hunting youth of the great cities kept their rendezvous in church. In these circumstances it should cause no surprise that the Lord, who permitted the destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem owing to the wickedness of the Jews, has now allowed bombs to fall on the churches deserted by the faithful.

One could say that the temple was sacramental in that it revealed invisible divine truths in ways which were visible and knowable to man. In so far as the temple was sacramental, it was only a shadow which pointed mankind to the reality to come.

Jewish tradition held that the rock upon which the temple was built, capped off a long shaft which led down into “The pit”, the netherworld, or the dark abode of the dead Sheol. The temple was situated half way between heaven and hell and was therefor the center of the universe.

And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." (Matthew 16:18-190When we study salvation history, especially in Sacred Scripture, we need to look at the alegorical sense - how it points to Jesus Christ and the Church he established. In the case of the temple, God not only allowed it to be destroyed but as it was only a shadow of the real Church to be established upon the rock of Peter, I am sure he willed it to be destroyed.

The temple had to be destroyed, as did many other Old Testament shadows, to make way for the New Testament reality of the Catholic Church.

I would not necessarily say “blessing and approval”, but rather that He permitted it to occur.

The outcry against the sins of Sodom and Gomorrah caused the Lord to go and see. Those cities would have been spared if even ten innocent men inhabited them. Our collective modern sins are exponentially worse. Is it only the lack of outcry against these modern sins that has allowed the Lord to remain in heaven? Keep your eyes on the skies. And, don’t look back.

Very clever:thumbsup:

But have you ever read the Old Testament? And MIGHT I have had in mind just the CC; not necessarly America?

Philosophically TRUE, but dumb ol Me is missing the point?
Because it can’t happen here.
NEVER SAY CAN"T is prudent advice my friend!

God Bless,

Sure. The OT, first and foremost, is the story of the Jewish “Chosen people.”

The human conditions of the OT no longer apply to take shape the same way.

Well, OK. You said America, so I answered to that.

Sure, church bodies can receive punishment, just like kingdoms can.
Philosophically TRUE, but dumb ol Me is missing the point?
Well, you asked how a Loving God could allow the temple to be destroyed. But that same God will one day allow you to die; and that will be much more hideous for YOU than the fate of two buildings in Israel a long, long time ago.
NEVER SAY CAN"T is prudent advice my friend!

Well, sometimes “can’t” is accurate. You CAN’T breathe water. There can’t be a forest fire at the bottom of the ocean. And the Holy Temple can’t be destroyed where it never was.

God Bless you too Pat, and ICXC NIKA.
