I just wanted to get people’s opinion on the movie twilight. Some people find it glorifies vampires and is in some cases morally compromising. I have my own opinion on it but I just wanted to hear from other people of the same faith.

love you all,
cat

I don’t care for Twilight. Wife used to love it, but she prefers Sr. Faustina now to the blood sucking vampires. Honestly, vampires don’t fit into a Catholic lifestyle. Just MHO.

I have problems with the fans, for example, once I saw Robert Pattinson in an interview, he said about a 7 y.o, girl who begged him to bite her and of course there are twi-mums (or something similar). I’m just amused that many Twilight fans seems aggressive and obsessed with it.

Besides that, the storyline isn’t that good & entertaining.

I think Twilight is just a story, and not a very good one at that. I think it is fine for a decerning adult or teenager who can distinguish real life from fiction. I think that is the real issue with most stories, the story itself is not inherently wrong it is if people can not discern the difference. Now if someone is unable to do that, like alot of the amped up fans then that is a problem with the fan/parent and not the movie itself.

First it is everything but not literature…Bella’s character is called a Mary Sue, the author created this perfect girl everyone loves but she used her own secret wishes and ideas about the character so she is actually her…that is one poor attribute.

Second, it is interesting that creatures like vampires started to be part of the society nowadays. I do love vampire movies or novels from the earlier 20th even 19th centuries. Those vampires represented the dark side we fought against them but meantime it was also something romantic, sad concept we wanted to understand 🙂 I actually felt sorry for them, and Coppola’s Dracula movie in which the count finally asks for God’s help before he dies is my favorite.

But in the last couple of years we see vegetarian vampires, vampires who live with us in peace…does that mean we got more spiritual, wanting to be good with these creatures in our fantasy, or does this mean we got closer to evil??? That is the interesting question to me.

Twilight…teen love…sparkling, vegetarian vampires…worse than a joke…😦

God bless

Now that you mentioned it, I remember that Twilight vampires aren’t normal vampire 😃
They’re glittering. 😃

I agree with “not a very good one at that”!

Meh. My younger sister got into them. I think they’re hilarious. I’ve watched one or two. Maybe three. Have never read the books. Could never read the books I tried but I just find the books laughable. But then maybe I just was never into the vampire thing. 🤷

It’s not something I would be jumping to show my kids were they under the age of 13. And even then, only with the explicit explanation that it’s all just fantasy. My 4 year old watches Bedknobs and Broomsticks (Disney with Angela Lansbury as witch) and she likes to mimic the ‘spells’ used in it. But I’ve told her and she seems to understand, that magic, at least in terms of witches and being able to turn people into “cute little bunnies” isn’t a real possibility at all. I’ve no intentions of sharing the “magic” of Bella & Edward with her at all.

I agree. I watched the first twilight movie under the preception of comedy. I read the last book out of curiosity… wow, that was quite the expiriance. They are hilarious; it’s almost an inside joke. I don’t see anything immoral about watching vampire or zombie movies. Though, some people fantasize about being vampires or literally think they ARE vampires. But if you raise your kids in a good environment, centered around your faith, that won’t happen. Watching one vampire movie won’t hurt you… especially twilight. It’s the most wholesome vampire series out there. Blade 2 was the most discusting vampire movie I’ve ever seen, do not let your children watch it.

I read all the books (worked in a book store when they were popular) and seen the movie. I don’t find anything particularly “immoral” about them, but I would never let (imaginary future) children (especially girls) read them. The relationship between Bella and Edward borders on abusive and the message about shutting out everyone you know and getting married right out of high school is not something I would want my kids to romanticize. Besides, the author is Mormon and all it lead me to believe is that, as women, they have a very warped world view.

Agreed. I’m not going to judge the author for her faith and beliefs; however, Morman traditions conflict with Catholic views.

I have no problems with vampires being the good guys. I use dragons and wizards in pretty much the same way.

What’s not the same though is that Meyer definitely is not the best author to tackle such a concept. The sparkling was a maaaaajor literary turn off!

Her writing style could definitely need more work. People are not exaggerating when they say it resembles bad fanfiction.

P.S.

Alucard > Edward Cullen

I do not like Twilight at all. I watched the first film, which was a complete mistake. I barely even remember most of what happened and it is just such an annoying series. Full of insane fans that are getting brainwashed into thinking these certain “actors” are amazing and the best looking people ever.

I can’t read vampire stories though, they completely disgust me in just everything that they do. I tried to read Jane Slayre(vampire version of Jane Eyre) I couldn’t even read the first page because I just got so disgusted.

I read Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, but that was okay because Lincoln was killing the vampires and doing what was right. Not supporting the things!

I have never read the books, but I have seen the three movies…out of curiosity for this cultural phenomenon more than anything else. I’ll probably see the 4th and 5th once they are released (when I can get the DVDs free from the library) just to see how it all plays out.

The problem with the series that I have isn’t about the vampires. My biggest problem is the obsessive form of “love” that it portrays between Edwards and Bella. They need each other so badly that separation pains them. I think it sets up a false idea of what true love is really all about. Romantic obsession is not the same thing as authentic love.

I really enjoyed this article:

The Twilight Series: Pro-chastity or not? by Dr. Christine Schintgen

This article does a great job of articulating my reservations about the series. It’s always nice to find articles that have already been written that say exactly what I would have said had I the desire or time to write it. 🙂

Given that vampires are mythological what difference does it make if they’re glorified? It’s fiction. If someone reads the books and thinks “ooooh I’m going to start sucking blood and covering my body in glitter” they clearly have issues that have nothing to do with the books. Personally, I hated the movies and couldn’t even make it past the first chatper of the first book, I think the author’s style is complete rubbish. Besides it’s not about vampires and werewolves… it’s a teenage love story that happens to have the beasts in it. If you want a vampire story try reading some of the Anne Rice books. 👍

Best t-shirt I ever saw that I plan on buying if I ever see it in a store…

“…and then Buffy staked Edward. The End.”

Good call on this Joe, I had the same thought when I saw the first movie. “STALKER!!!”

😃 Classic.

I know, right?. When I saw the movie, all I could think of was, if some guy ever looked at my teenage daughter like that, I’d have to rethink my position on owning a shotgun! 😛

“You kids go ahead into the living room and watch tv… I’ll be in the den cleaning my guns”
