1st. I watched a movie the traitor(about a corrupt cop, it’s pretty interesting), great movie. Snoop dogg was in it and I figured I’d google ‘Is snoop dogg a actor’. While typing ’ Is snoop dogg" I got in search suggestions ‘Is snoop dog satanic’. Then, all this stuff about selling his soul to the devil and such and the question came to me. As catholics, do we believe in that or is it jibberish? I mean it’s not something we should can , but seeing that thought bothers me. I want to say no, as god owns our souls? I found something saying that heavy metal was made by the devil, but then rape was created by the devil to attract more people. Thought that sounds a little weird… anyways so yeah you cant sell your soul?

2nd. Is sex before marriage sinful? I mean, if I just went out to have sex and such then yes. But, what if you known the person for a while and treat them with love? Will it be sinful, if sex comes out of love rather than lust? I’m in high school, and I know hormones are kicking in so… my feelings for other people may just be lust…:S but in college I think I will be more mature and actually feel real feelings and wonder, if dating that person for a decent amount of time and love them, would sex be okay, before marriage.

The half question :D!What are the johavoh’s witnesses? They always knock at my door? Would it be sinful if I turned my sprinkler on T_T?
Thanks.

Yes. In all cases. Sex is ordered to be between a man and a women within marriage. Anything else (which would include outside of marriage) is disordered and sinful.

The JWs are a non-trinitarian “Christian” religion (sort of on the fringe of Christianity). It would definitely not be charitable at least.

Yes it is possible to sell your soul to the devil. Sale is null and void upon repentance.

I think what spirithound means is that you can’t permanently sell your soul to the devil.

In movies and stories, often a character will sell their soul to the devil for fame or riches. And then years later the devil will come back and say, “hey I kept up my end of the bargain, time to come with me.”

In reality, if you “sell your soul”, that is, turn away from God and embrace evil, you can repent at any time and turn back to God. It is in no way permanent. If Snoop Dog is living apart from God, and it is not our place to determine that, then we can pray that he repents. But God always has the upper hand in these cases. If someone is really deep in Satan’s grasp, and calls to God for help, He will defeat Satan no matter how long it takes or how hard it is.

As for your other question, sometimes we think we know better than the Church (not saying you do). And we say, well I know I understand the spirit of the law, but maybe in this case the letter of the law doesn’t apply to me. I really love this person, so maybe it’s not subjectively sinful for me to commit what is objectively a mortal sin. Sure, technically, there can be a circumstance where the Church says something is objectively sinful, but in a particular case, it’s not subjectively sinful. But 99.9999999999 % of the time, what the Church says is objectively sinful is also subjectively sinful.

Sex is by its nature a marital act. It is designed for marriages. It is inherently unitive and procreative. A couple that is not married has not completely unified, and so cannot honestly commit the unitive act of sex. They can love each other, and be attracted to each other, sure. But they have not received the grace from the Sacrament of Matrimony that allows them to enter into a higher plane of unification and therefore enables them to engage in the unitive sex act. Furthermore, it is highly unlikely that they would be open to life outside of marriage. If they are open to life, it doesn’t make sense that they wouldn’t just get married.

Also, you seem to be a little misinformed about what college is like. Rarely are college students in committed, mature relationships. When they are in long term relationships, they are usually dysfunctional, and frequently involve infidelity. Most college students play the random hook up game, or the friends with benefits game. At my college, people hook up with different people every weekend, and have 2 or 3 sex partners at any given time. The people who are in relationships cheat on one another or fight constantly. There are few couples that are faithful and happy, and essentially none that are chaste. The people that neither hook up nor are in relationships are somewhat shunned. And I go to a Catholic school. I know that’s not saying much nowadays, but it should say something.

College is all about sex, as is high school, apparently. Instead of trying to justify embracing that culture, rise above it. You will be a much better person for it.

Think of it this way. If you want to wait for that special person to have sex for the first time, when you find them, why not wait until you’re married and it is even more special? You will only know for sure if they are that special person once you are married. Before that, it will only be a guess. I’d rather play it safe and not give myself to someone who might not be there tomorrow, even if I’m 80% sure they will be.

On your wedding night, when you are sure beyond a shadow of a doubt that you are sharing something with your spouse that you haven’t shared with anyone else, you will be glad you waited.

Pax, friend!

erigby,

I have to say I disagree with you about college. There are many people who have monogamous and even chaste relationships in college, many of which end in loving marriages. Granted, it’s been a few years since I was in college, but most of the people I knew in college, and pretty much all of the ones I still keep in touch with, were faithful to their significant others, if they had them, and some of the relationships, like mine with my now husband, were chaste. It is not impossible! 🙂

I am sorry for you if your college is as bad as you describe. You sound very disillusioned about it, and I hope that you can find some friends who feel the same way you do about things. I am sure they are out there, even if they are the shunned ones - those may be the people most worth knowing! 😉 I don’t deny that there were certainly the kind of things going on at my Catholic college, but they were not the majority of students. Most took their school work very seriously, whatever else they did on weekends.

The rest of your answers about sex outside of marriage were right on, though! It was hard sometimes, the waiting, especially once I knew who I wanted to spend the rest of my life with, but it was so worth it. I cannot imagine sharing myself like that with anyone else, and feel sorry for those who feel so badly about themselves that they use sex as something it is not.

There really are no people who feel the same way I do about things here. There are a few, and I am friends with them, but I could count them on my hand. I’m glad you were at a school where the situation I described was the exception, and not the rule. That’s great! Sometimes, I wish I had chosen a more conservative school. But I definitely stand by my description. Even the people who aren’t sexually promiscuous are only waiting for the right moment, but have no intention of waiting for marriage. I imagine it’s even worse at a public school. I wish I could have met a nice boy in college who shares my beliefs and is also on my level intellectually. Unfortunately is seems like my options are nice Christian boys who aren’t on my level intellectually, or boys who are on my level intellectually but aren’t nice and Christian. To be honest, I only have 1 or 2 Catholic friends at school. So it goes!

In terms of the Snoop Dogg question, as was stated before, yes it is possible to sell your soul (satan worshipers do exist), but I would not necessarily trust a tabloid or any other kind of human writing in considering the state of someone’s soul. Rather, I would encourage you to look at the fruits they produce. Does it show a distorted view of human life? Does it encourage you to build habits which will distract you from the truth in reality?

For the sex/maturity/college question, please be aware of the way our culture has changed our understanding of nature, and with that, our understanding of God. According to nature, sex is the strongest expression of love; strong enough to produce life. Sex is naturally connected to life. It is only through human intercession that sex and life are disconnected and demoted to being simply about pleasure. If we did not have condoms or other forms of artificial birth control then how different do you think our culture would be? I would encourage you to look into Humanae Vutae or the Theology of the Body to have a deeper understanding as to why the Church holds such a strong view on the relationship between sex and marriage. It is much more insightful than I ever expected and it gives you a pretty strong understanding of the role of the Church in today’s society.

With your third question, I actually had that experience this past week. If you have the time, I would recommend accepting one of their pamphlets and asking them to come back later to discuss further. There are plenty of sites to help you in terms of understanding where the Catholic Church and the JW differ, and it will give you a stronger understanding of your faith (it helped with mine, and I came across some interesting random things which I did not expect). Just remembering to be kind and respectful to their inherent dignity will be good also in showing them the truth in the kind of person Catholics are called to be.

Anyway, I hope I helped. Best wishes.

Lynn, I really wish I’d had the resources to attend a private, Catholic university. But, like many folks, I had to use my military service benefits to pay for my college, so I was forced to attend a state school. My brother, however, was able to attend a small Catholic university, and we both share the same Bachelor’s degree. His Catholic school’s faculty was so much more conservative than mine at the state University! I was forced to butt heads with many overly-liberal professors because of my strict conservative (and Catholic) mind-set… and in more cases than I like to admit, my grades reflected those differences of viewpoint. 😦

It’s no surprise to me about the claims about the rather wild sexual lives of adolescent students at public Universities (and even High Schools) alleged earlier by Ms.ERigby; I’d have no reason at all to doubt her assertions, judging from my own experiences, which add support.

Regards,
Ponyguy

The worst part, ponyguy, is that I actually go to a Catholic school. Can you believe it? I also have butted heads with professors and occasionally felt the sting in my grades because of my beliefs. It seems so ridiculous! I wish I had gone to a smaller, more conservative school like St. Thomas Aquinas or John Paul the Great!
