Two become one flesh

I heard this from a friend of mine, not sure if this is already out there on this forum but I had never heard it before so I thought I would share it. I imagine this thought must’ve come through someone’s musings, during prayer or during meditation. I thought it was quite a unique observation and presents an interesting perspective.

In the creation story, God created “man”. However, how could God have created “man” without a reference point – i.e. how could he create man without woman to differentiate between the two?

So this person’s thought was…God created a human being who was neither man nor woman at first – this human being was one flesh. Then God “separated” this human being into two beings that could then be differentiated – man and woman – and when man and women become united again in holy matrimony, they once again become one flesh – they started as one flesh and they ended as one flesh!

(I know this idea may lead to problems if people read into it too much, so take it with a grain of salt!)

and if you figure that out who will come to know that Jesus is God?

God created man, as in, mankind. This is why Genesis says He create man male and female.

This is not a new view at all, in fact its a rabbinical tradition, and one which the Syrian Church Fathers such as St Ephraim (Ephrem) believed in and refer to in his writings. Once St Ephraim said that Adam “was both one and two; one in that he was man [adam], two in that he was created both male and female”
