Dominican School of Philosophy & Theology in Berkeley offering two classes on Sacred Icons in their Summer Session.
Sacred Image: June 7 - 1
Introduction to Icon Painting: June 14 - 18
Both classes taught by Fr. Brendan McAnerney, OP. Fr. Brendan is a Dominican priest with faculties to serve as a priest in the Melkite-Greek Catholic Church, in which he is a consecrated iconographer.
I audited the lecture (not the writing/painting) class two years ago and it was excellent.
Thank You for the heads-up on this class. It’s greatly appriciated. I enjoy sacred art, so this is ideal. I’m only about an hour and a half from Berkeley.
The classes are still open. If you’re interested call Teresa Olson, Registrar (510) 883-2068, Office Hours: Monday 10:00 - 3:30, Tuesday and Thursday 8:30-5:00
I ended up taking both classes. It was a wonderful 2 weeks. I just got some photos. Mine was the only one that didn’t have “Holy Mandylion” written on it. I didn’t want any English on mine. I like that my Christ looks like he has a broken nose.
The group shot is in the chapel at DSPT when Fr Brendan and Fr Eugene blessed the Icons.
Fr. Brendan will offer the 2 classes again next summer at DSPT if enough people register, but soon he is going to stop offering it elsewhere.
At one point during the painting/writing class he said “You’ll never look at Holy Icons the same way again.” June 28 I was at the Great Vespers at an Orthodox parish I’ve been to many times. I’ve spent quite a few hours praying before their iconostasis. That night I looked at it and did feel like many of the Holy Icons looked so different to me. I can’t say I felt that way in my own church. Anyway, it was an interesting experience.
