This is my opinion so feel free to add your own personal preferences for all to consider.

I feel it is definetly important to pray for those who came before us and have passed away, the holy souls in purgatory. Tradition holds that they can not pray for themselves and they have to spend time expiating their sins on their souls to perfection before they can join with God. Think of being alone and suffering and seperated from God, knowing of his light and love and wanting to be with him. I look at it from a selfish point of view, i know I will have to go to purgatory and will need prayers and hope that someone will be praying for me, also I hope that someone I pray for when they get before God in heaven will remember my efforts and maybe whisper a prayer for me into His ear.

The second group is the catholics who are still alive and have fallen away from the practise of the faith, these souls have no spiritual armor to sheild them from the temptations and evil influence of satan and his minions. They may feel they no longer beleive or they may feel their sins are too great to be forgiven. Pray to awake a sense of urgency in their hearts to avail themselves of the gifts of the Sacraments while they are still able to do so.

These people need our prayers, they deserve our prayers just out of our duty to practise the greatest commandment, to love one another.

Yes! I love the Holy Souls and try to include them in my prayers, especially family and friends, but also anyone mentioned in these threads or the news.
As for lapsed or fallen-away Catholics, I especially like to include schismatics and anti-Catholics in prayer.
There is so much need for prayer in this world, and so many people and good causes. You have hit on two of the most important groups. I pray that we all keep praying!
