English is not my first language, so I apologize for any misspellings.

I have two question that made me little bit upset.

First one, I’v read Evangelical book few months ago and it said that before what Martin Lauther did, the Catholic church didn’t allowed the people to have the bible, and the church was killing any one who had copy of the bible? Is that true? and in case it is, why?

The second one is the Indulgences, Who did that? And is it okay?

May God bless you all guys.

Regarding the Bible being sheltered from the people, that is false. The Church delivered Scripture to the people at the Liturgy, and there were vernacular translations. The printing press itself was invented in 1450, just before Luther, which made it next to impossible to distribute Bibles in large quantities because Bibles had to be hand-written to be reproduced back then.

The Church did not kill people for having the Bible.

Sometimes when you hear crazy claims from other people, you should demand that they show you source materials. Once they do that, then we can analyze the claim. If they cannot, such a claim may be dismissed until demonstrated otherwise.

Indulgences are a doctrine related to the grace we have from Christ, and how applying it in our lives contributes to the remission of our sins. For a nice article, I recommend A Primer on Indulgences by Jimmy Akin.

Good answers already…but I would like to add to this aspect that once the printing press came into use There cam legitimate concern within the Church that the Bible be properly translated. During the Protestant reformation there were a number of unauthorized versions floating around - Versions that had not been reviewed and approved by the Church. In countries where the king was Catholic, it was a crime to have one of these versions under civil law.
But the issue was not one of “keeping the bible from the people”, it was an issue of making sure that the accuracy of the bible was protected from poor - or deliberately misleading - translations.

So - some book simply stating that it was a crime to have a bible is not giving all of the story…

Before the printing press, all manuscripts were copied by hand. Imangine the time it took to hand write one bible? That made each book extremely valuable. The average person couldn’t afford to buy a bible, not to mention the average person couldn’t read or write so they couldn’t read a bible for themselves anyway…

Sin and punishment for sin are linked together. Indulgences are given by the Church for the purpose of reducing the penalty of sin. The Church was given that power by Jesus to do that. “whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, whatever you lose on earth will be loosed in heaven”

Example of penalty for sin.

You break a neighbors window. You say you’re sorry and the neighbor forgives you. But you’re required to still fix the window. That’s the penalty even though you’re forgiven. Suppose the neighbor gives you a break on the cost, due to your contrite attitude. He indulged you with respect to lightening the penalty. Someone else he might have expected full payment.

In the spiritual realm the Church intercedes for the individual.
