Being Catholic like you the central part of the service is the Eucharist.
However being past Protestant, I think the sermon / homily should be around 15 to 20 minutes, but it needs to be done well.
One of my biggest disappointments with the Catholic Church has been the poor standard of homilies, compared to what I was used to with my first and most outstanding pastor.
The other disappointment has been the lack of effort in getting a music ministry going.

The central part of my weekly worship, like the poster before me, is the Eucharist.
According to my homiletics teacher in the seminary, a good homily should be between 5 to 10 minutes.

The homilies vary with each priest, although each can deliver sporadic gems if you’re attentive. (Not being critical) The ‘WHOLE’ Mass is the ‘homily’…the summit being The Eucharist.
The ‘music ministry’ is where you come in.!??..if you choose to accept it…(No clapping pop songs though, please.)

I’m not sure if there is a “central part”. Some people come for the prayer and worship. Others time their arrival to hear the pastor’s message and most televised services focus on the message. Yet there are others who come primarily to fellowship with their extended church family.
Many will not do any other religious/moral study during the week other then the message. As a society, perhaps it is hardwired in us, we work in 30 minute blocks. 50 minute classes we put students through tend to be too long as attention spans lag.

The central part of Friends weekly worship is the Light of Christ in our midst. He is truly present among us and we worship and seek to hear his Voice as he ministers to our hearts.
As long as the Spirit leads someone to offer vocal ministry…sometimes no one is led to offer vocal ministry.
