Two questions on Extraordinary Eucharistic Ministers

  1. Are EEM’s allowed to pick up ciboriums or chalices from the altar prior to distributing communion, or should they receive the ciborium/chalice from a priest or deacon?
  2. After communion, the EEMs at our parish take the ciboriums and chalices to another room where they drink the remaining precious blood and place the remaining hosts in the tabernacle. Is it proper for lay ministers to perform these tasks?
Are there official documents that address these questions?

  1. NO, they are NOT allowed to take anything from the altar themselves, they must be handed them by the priest.
  2. The remaining Precious Blood should be consummed at the altar by the priest, deacon or others (in that order). The priest or deacon should then take the remaining hosts in a ciboruim to the tabernacle. The ciboriums and chalices can be placed on a table to be purified later.
You will find these in the GIRM and RS.
 
Also, EEM’s are NOT to enter the sanctuary prior to administering the Eucharist.

I cannot stand when they all line up behind the priest during the prayer…
 
They are also not to be called “Extraordinary Eucharistic Ministers.” There is no such thing. They are properly called “Extraordinary Ministers of Hoy Communion.”
 
The Liturgical norms put out by the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops can be found under Redemptionis Sacramentum. Go to the website for USCCB or EWTN and click on this document. Scroll down to find your answers. There are many parishes who are not following the requirements for handling the Eucharist. Sadly, few priests teach this correctly.
