Two questions regarding God's will

Hello friends, two questions:
Why did God let Israel beign totally defeated in the hands of the Romans, if they already had renounced politheism?
Why does God in the New Testament teach us to turn the other cheek, while in the Old Testament God encourages and helps Israel to defeat his enemies?

'O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, killing the prophets and stoning those who are sent to you! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you would not! Behold, your house is forsaken and desolate. Jesus predicted this and in 70 AD the city was completely destroyed.

G-d is forever testing the Jewish people to see whether they have faith. The Roman conquest and the destruction of the Temple on two occasions is but one of the many trials and tribulations that befell the Jews in their long history, and even now they have not seen the end of their suffering. But the faith perseveres despite all the tragic events.

The G-d of the OT is both merciful and just, as is the G-d of the NT. The focus appears to have shifted but this is only superficial, as a deeper analysis reveals G-d’s justice within His mercy and G-d’s mercy within His justice.
