My name is Charles Mwamba aged 39. Iam Catholic and belong to St. Johns Parish in Archdiocese of Kasama, Zambia.I greet you all members and hope am welcome to this club.

My first two questions are:
  1. I usually watch EWTN TV programmes including daily mass but wonder why there are only elderly Christians in church. Are there no youth around that church ? Or should l assume that all youth have joined the pentecostal churches?
  2. Whats the Church’s official position about the Charismatic group within the church. Some Priests support it so much yet others don’t.

Hi Charles and welcome to CAF. We’re glad to have you! 🙂
My first two questions are:
  1. I usually watch EWTN TV programmes including daily mass but wonder why there are only elderly Christians in church. Are there no youth around that church ? Or should l assume that all youth have joined the pentecostal churches?
Certainly there are young people around that church up in Alabama. ( I used to live not too far from there.) The thing is that the time when that Mass is celebrated may not be one where they can attend because of school, work, or something else. I have seen Masses on EWTN where there were younger people there, so it’s not a consistent thing.

I know that at the Masses in my parish there are great many young people.

Rest assured that they have by no means joined Pentecostal churches. In fact many have come to join us and converted from those churches. I myself was Pentecostal (Assembly of God) for many years before the Holy Spirit led me home to our most holy faith. Read my testimony.

I’m not sure that there is an “official” position with regard to it, but I do know that the Catholic Church has always had saints who displayed the various gifts of the Holy Spirit in very powerful ways. I’m thinking of Padre Pio, St. Francis & St. Clare of Assisi, St. Catherine Laboure, and many others, so it’s not like displays of gifts of the Holy Spirit are anything very new to Catholicism.

Personally, I no longer attend such services, just because the Mass is much more powerful to me than any of those services ever were before. So long as they obey the church and the Word of God and everything is done in order, I have no issues with it.

I hope that helps.

Welcome, Charles, the forums
EWTN TV Masses are usually filmed in their chapel or church, which is both a pilgrimage destination, and a tourist destination but I don’t think it is a parish church, attendance does not reflect an average Catholic parish. For the weekday Masses, which of course are filmed before they are aired, most attendees, even in a regular parish, will probably be adults, and often retired people, becaues most youth are in school and adults at work. For weekend Masses, the attendance at EWTN will reflect who the tourists are, and esp. at this time of year, most of them will be retired people. They do quite often have groups of younger people, there for a special reason such as a conference or retreat.

The demographic of the Church in America as a whole is getting younger and more ethnically diverse every year.

Yes the Catholic Charismatic Renewal is alive and well in the US in many parishes and college campus ministries. It is an approved spirituality and attracts many priests and lay people. It is especially popular among Hispanic congregations, but not exclusively found there. A lay spirituality movement called Cursillo which is grounded in charismatic spirituality is still very widespread, especially among Hispanics (the largest and fastest growing ethnic “minority” in the US).

We discuss things related to the Charismatic Renewal on the spirituality forum, and I will try to post some links later today as I am on my way to work now. A visitor to this country who prefers to worship in a charismatic parish should find one to his liking in most large or average size American cities.

Peace of Christ be with you!

As the other posters stated, mostly we see elderly persons attending the televised Mass because the young(er) people are working or in school, not because they have left the Church. In fact, there is a great youth revival currently going on in the Catholic Church (especially among college-aged youth). Curtis Martin has called this the age of the “New Evangelism.”

If you are interested in the Catholic charismatic movement, you might check out a FIRE Rally. FIRE stands for Faith, Intercession, Repentence, and Evangelization. I’m not sure if they have these in your part of the world, but there is no reason why there can’t! 🙂

At that time most children are in public school and can not attend or Catholic school and thus attend their own mass. Additionally, most parishes now have a teen Mass on Sunday which allows separation between the Teenagers and others. Frankly, many of us do not like the method used for Teen Mass

I do not know if there is an official position, The Charismatics believe the Holy Spirit is highly active on a daily bases in life. This is an issue which may or may not be correct, humans simply do not know

I live in the South and daily Mass is at 7:00 and 12:00. Kids are either at school or getting ready for school at that time.
