I have asked this before, but I was wondering if a certified apologist can answer this.

Can a Catholic listen to the band “Two steps from hell”? Their music is mostly epic / trailer /dramatic orchestral / instrumental music (no words). However, one of the cover-arts for their albums have this vampiric figure with horns on it (album is called arch-angel) and they have another album called “Power of darkness.” Obviously, they also have the word “hell” in their group name. Honestly, I love their music.

Also… does anybody have any background research on this specific group? Do you think they have any traces of subtle demonic influences in their music (like subliminal messaging, etc)?

Just want to be 110% sure.

PS: Their song “heart of courage” was actually used in WYD 2010 theme.

There is no such thing a a “certified apologist.”
Can a Catholic listen to the band “Two steps from hell”?
Probably. Does the Catholic intend to cast derision upon the Church in doing so? Does the Catholic intend to allow this music to lead himself into sin?

If the answer to either question is “no” then you do not need a “certified apologist” (whatever that means) to answer your question. I can assure you that it is OK (and I’m just an ordinary layman).

FWIW, I know a devout and highly orthodox priest who likes the music of Nine Inch Nails.

‘Two steps from hell’… does it tell you something?
Music is a powerful weapon for satan, one needs to ask oneself a very important question here:
Do I worship the church, the world and satan OR should I worship GOD, Jesus Christ and trust in the bible alone?
Will such music influence you, nine inch nails are obvious, what about justin bieber, then michael w smith (well known and followed christian rockstar who publically confessed to worship satan) Check the info for yourself.
Will this music bring me closer to the Almighty GOD? You know the answer.
Follow Jesus Christ to have hope in salvation, amen.

Proof Michael W Smith is a satanist.
Just concerned because we sing his songs at school.

I think you need to use your own mind to discern this for yourself rather that looking for an “expert” to tell you what to think. God wants us to use the intellectual gifts he gave us. The Church does a great job of giving us sound moral principles and guidance on the most important issues. For stuff like this, we have to be able to sort it out for ourselves else we find ourselves in the position of being unable to make moral decisions on our own.

I listened to bits of your links. It doesn’t sound like it’s promoting a feeling of chaos or anarchy as some heavy music does. I rekon its alright. it holds suspence but nothing destructive that I could perceive.

Music can carry power. You know what I mean. It comes from the spiritual realm. When you feel it as a negative force stop listening to it. Even though it might feel really good, if it’s negative it will lead to depression if you let yourself be embraced in it. that leaves the door open for other more serious problems. When you feel a power song just pause a while to try to work out if it could be described as a Godly power or not.

I am in the same mind but i had a friend tell me recently " if no steps from hell is hell, and one step from hell is purgatory, then what is two steps from hell?" as it is not exactly heaven it is more of the mind set of earth and the want to do good.

Hello !

I have the same concern about their name… I love their music, it transports me and makes me find peace. I can’t find any information directly from the group, how they understood the name at the beginning.

I agree with Joseph. Two steps from hell… Listenning to my favourite musics of Two steps from hell, I imagine it may mean “I’m going all the time the wrong way, “directly to hell”. But I hear this music. Where is it coming from ? All is dark, but there must light somewhere. I have to search and find this light. I want to go away from what I knew until now, this all bad stuffs, in order to follow the light, I want to reach it. I can begin all at once in order to be a better person, I can, but I must decide it, and act for it. A battle may begin, I must be ready”… In that sense it may be the story of a conversion, the discovery of Beauty… It is kind of feelings that arise in me when I listen to that music…

But in fact I don’t know where they are taking their inspiration from, and there are some other of their music that I can’t listen to, that I find repellent. So I stay careful about the feelings which appears with music, and I listen or not acording to them.

Wikipedia’s talk page for the group pointed me to a Facebook posting from one of the members. He says this about the name:
A lot of people think it’s a religious thing, and we have even received mail from people who think we worship the devil and think we are going to hell lol! That is NOT the case. We are both very down to earth and we never intended to offend anyone.
For the name I borrowed some inspiration from a party place in my home town in Norway. The club was called “Two floors from heaven”. It had a catchy ring to it so I changed it a little and that’s all there is to it
For the uninitiated, Two Steps from Hell is a classical/soundtrack music group. Basically they write orchestra soundtracks for movies that don’t exist.

Nothing evil about it.

I love this kind of orchestral/soundtrack music! It makes for really good workout music.

Thanks for sharing it actually. 😛
