I was visiting a local Church this afternoon (Now Anglican but was Catholic from the 11th Century up until the reformation). Other than the massive amount of damage that had been done during the reformation one other thing shocked me. The Church has a two storied sanctury dating from the late 11th or early 12th century. I’ve never seen an Altar downstairs and then another one directly above on a balcony before and I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on the purpose of this arrangement.
