What is your favorite typological connection between the Old Testament and the New?

Mine is the Ark of the Covenant and Mary…
Both contained the embodiment of the covenant within them.
Both were untouchable to men.
Both lead the people of God in battle.
 
I’ve gotta admit, Mary and the Ark of the Covenant blew me away the first time I read about it, and it still does today!

I also like the extensive Typology between:
Moses and Jesus
and
Isaac and Jesus
 
I think we should compite a great large grid with all of the types and their fulfilments. That would make a handy resource!

That would be good for those of us who are not too well informed about typology.

I have read here more than once that Catholic typology is rather. . . . lacking.

So you guys prove that notion is wrong and I’ll cheer y’all on.

Each were women of Israel who used a weapon to destroy Israel’s enemy, just as Mary used Jesus to destroy Satan.

Each woman was then pronounced to be, “Most blessed among women…”
 
I was also amazed at just how much Moses points toward Jesus.

The Old Testament witnesses to the power of water when used as a type, or foreshadowing, of baptism. We have only to look at the first creation to see the Spirit bringing life and order out of the waters that covered the earth (Genesis 1:1–2, 20). The Bible also speaks of Noah being saved through water as a symbol of us being saved through the waters of baptism (Gen. 6:9–18; 1 Pet. 3:20–21).

The Bible uses baptismal imagery when Moses delivers Israel from the tyranny of Egypt through the waters of the Red Sea (Ex. 14; 1 Cor. 10:2). The Levitical priests were cleansed by the washing of baptismal waters held in a laver before they entered the Tabernacle (Ex. 30:17–21). The Syrian general Naaman was healed through baptism (dipping seven times) in the waters of the Jordan river (2 Kgs. 5). God’s promise through Ezekiel pointed to the cleansing work of water baptism (Ezek. 36:25–27).

Some information on Isaac and Jesus:

¨ Isaac and Jesus were “only, beloved” sons of a righteous father [Ishmael had been sent away]

¨ Both Isaac and Jesus are identified as the “son of Abraham” [see Matthew 1:1]

¨ Both were offered in sacrifice

¨ The sacrifice was offered in the land of Moriah - Jerusalem

¨ Both sons carried the wood for their own sacrifice [see John 19:27]

¨ Both were “bound” and placed on top of the wood

¨ Both willingly allow themselves to be offered in sacrifice

Ooh, I’ve never heard of this. What verses correspond? This is really interesting…🙂
 
II. Mary - the Immaculate Ark of the New Covenant
Exodus 25:11-21 - the ark of the Old Covenant was made of the purest gold for God’s Word. Mary is the ark of the New Covenant and is the purest vessel for the Word of God made flesh.

2 Sam. 6:7 - the Ark is so holy and pure that when Uzzah touched it, the Lord slew him. This shows us that the Ark is undefiled. Mary the Ark of the New Covenant is even more immaculate and undefiled, spared by God from original sin so that she could bear His eternal Word in her womb.

1 Chron. 13:9-10 - this is another account of Uzzah and the Ark. For God to dwell within Mary the Ark, Mary had to be conceived without sin. For Protestants to argue otherwise would be to say that God would let the finger of Satan touch His Son made flesh. This is incomprehensible.

1 Chron. 15 and 16 - these verses show the awesome reverence the Jews had for the Ark - veneration, vestments, songs, harps, lyres, cymbals, trumpets.

Luke 1:39 / 2 Sam. 6:2 - Luke’s conspicuous comparison’s between Mary and the Ark described by Samuel underscores the reality of Mary as the undefiled and immaculate Ark of the New Covenant. In these verses, Mary (the Ark) arose and went / David arose and went to the Ark. There is a clear parallel between the Ark of the Old and the Ark of the New Covenant.

Luke 1:41 / 2 Sam. 6:16 - John the Baptist / King David leap for joy before Mary / Ark. So should we leap for joy before Mary the immaculate Ark of the Word made flesh.

Luke 1:43 / 2 Sam. 6:9 - How can the Mother / Ark of the Lord come to me? It is a holy privilege. Our Mother wants to come to us and lead us to Jesus.

Luke 1:56 / 2 Sam. 6:11 and 1 Chron. 13:14 - Mary / the Ark remained in the house for about three months.

Rev 11:19 - at this point in history, the Ark of the Old Covenant was not seen for six centuries (see 2 Macc. 2:7), and now it is finally seen in heaven. The Jewish people would have been absolutely amazed at this. However, John immediately passes over this fact and describes the “woman” clothed with the sun in Rev. 12:1. John is emphasizing that Mary is the Ark of the New Covenant and who, like the Old ark, is now worthy of veneration and praise. Also remember that Rev. 11:19 and Rev. 12:1 are tied together because there was no chapter and verse at the time these texts were written.

Rev 12:1 - the “woman” that John is describing is Mary, the Ark of the New Covenant, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. Just as the moon reflects the light of the sun, so Mary, with the moon under her feet, reflects the glory of the Sun of Justice, Jesus Christ.

Rev. 12:17 - this verse tells us that Mary’s offspring are those who keep God’s commandments and bear testimony to Jesus. This demonstrates, as Catholics have always believed, that Mary is the Mother of all Christians.

Rev. 12:2 - Some Protestants argue that, because the woman had birth pangs, she was a woman with sin. However, Revelation is apocalyptic literature unique to the 1st century. It contains varied symbolism and multiple meanings of the woman (Mary, the Church and Israel). The birth pangs describe both the birth of the Church and Mary’s offspring being formed in Christ. Mary had no birth pangs in delivering her only Son Jesus.

Isaiah 66:7 - for example, we see Isaiah prophesying that before she (Mary) was in labor she gave birth; before her pain came upon her she was delivered of a son (Jesus). This is a Marian prophecy of the virgin birth of Jesus Christ.

Gal 4:19 - Paul also describes his pain as birth pangs in forming the disciples in Christ. Birth pangs describe formation in Christ.

Rom. 8:22 - also, Paul says the whole creation has been groaning in travail before the coming of Christ. We are all undergoing birth pangs because we are being reborn into Jesus Christ.

Jer. 13:21 - Jeremiah describes the birth pangs of Israel, like a woman in travail. Birth pangs are usually used metaphorically in the Scriptures.

Hos. 13:12-13 - Ephraim is also described as travailing in childbirth for his sins. Again, birth pangs are used metaphorically.

Micah 4:9-10 - Micah also describes Jerusalem as being seized by birth pangs like a woman in travail.

Rev. 12:13-16 - in these verses, we see that the devil still seeks to destroy the woman even after the Savior is born. This proves Mary is a danger to satan, even after the birth of Christ. This is because God has given her the power to intercede for us, and we should invoke her assistance in our spiritual lives.

He also shows how the Early Church Fathers taught this doctrine from the very beginning:

Chrysippus
“An ark truly royal, an ark most precious is the ever-Virgin Mother of God, an ark which received the treasure of entire sanctification. Not that ark wherein were all kinds of animals, as in the ark of Noe, which escaped the shipwreck of the whole drowning world. Not that ark in which were the tables of stone, as in the ark that journeyed in company with Israel throughout the desert; but an ark whose architect and inhabitant, pilot and merchant, companion of the way, and leader, was the Creator of all creatures, all which He bears in Himself, but by all is not contained” (Chrysippus, Orat. de laudib. Deip. (Blessed Virgin, p. 74).

St. Hippolytus (c. 170-c. 236)
“At that time, the Savior coming from the Virgin, the Ark, brought forth His own Body into the world from that Ark, which was gilded with pure gold within by the Word, and without by the Holy Ghost; so that the truth was shown forth, and the Ark was manifested…And the Savior came into the world bearing the incorruptible Ark, that is to say His own body” (S. Hippolytus, In Dan.vi., Patr. Gr., Tom. 10, p. 648) (Blessed Virgin, p. 77).

St. Gregory Thaumaturgus (c. 213-c. 270)
“The ark is verily the holy Virgin, gilded within and without, who received the treasure of universal sanctification. Arise, O Lord, from the Father’s bosom, to raise up again the ruined race of our first parent” (O*rat. in Deip. Annunciat. * Int. Opp. S. Greg. Thaumaturg) (Blessed Virgin, p. 89).
Another translation renders this: “Let us chant the melody which has been taught us by the inspired harp of David, and say, “Arise, O Lord, into Thy rest; Thou, and the Ark of Thy sanctuary.” For the holy Virgin is in truth an Ark, wrought with gold both within and without, that has received the whole treasury of the sanctuary.
 
Why Typology is so important:
  1. It shows the unicity of scripture and Canonicity.
  2. Consequently, it shows that God is the Author of all scripture.
  3. It develops Bible knowledge of both Old and New Test.
  4. It teaches you to look deeper and see the symbolism and actions of God behind the scenes in everyday life. i.e. There is a reason for everything.(No coincidence).
Would anyone out there be interested in a book on typology?
I put one together but I dont know how to go about getting it published any suggestions?

The Catholic Church is seriously lacking a good book on Typology. I always envisioned “Catholic for a Reason IV - Reading the New in the Old”.

How about the entire history of Jews being a foreshadowing of the history of the Church (in a spiritual sense):

OT Typology and Church History

How about how the Two WItnesses of Revelation 11 are going back to the prophets of the OT, but in the NT they are fulfilled in the Magisterium of the Catholic Church (Scripture and Tradition):

How about the similarity between the OT kingdom schism, and the NT kingdom schism:
