U.S. Bishop Change: Gary, Indiana

On Monday, November 24, 2014, Auxiliary Bishop Donald Hying of Milwaukee was chosen by Pope Francis I to become the new bishop of Gary, Indiana. The current bishop, Melczek, who is 76, had his retirement accepted.

I’ve heard good things about Bishop Hying. During his time in Milwaukee, he was instrumental in cleaning out St. Francis de Sales Seminary in Milwaukee, where he was rector from 2007 to 2011. During Bishop Hying’s time as rector, the Archdiocese had two of the largest ordination classes in recent times.

He is a great man. I have been blessed to have met him and discussed my thoughts on the Church with him. He has done a lot to get youth involved in the Arch (Boating with the Bishop during the summer), as well as many speeches throughout about the Catholic faith. Very humble too, I might add.

I am very sad to see him leave, but I am happy to see him get “promoted” to a higher position within the Church. If there were more like him in charge, it would be a great thing for the future of the Church. Many prayers and blessings to him on his new journey!
