The president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops kicked off a gathering in St. Louis of approximately 250 bishops from across the country by referring to Ferguson.
“We mourn those tragic events in which African Americans and others have lost their lives in altercations with law enforcement,” Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville, Ky., said in a statement that was read by Bishop Ronny Jenkins, general secretary of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. “Racism is an evil which endures in our society and in our church.”

The title sounds misleading. I don’t see any evidence that the USCCB is condemning the police. “lost life in altercation with law enforcement” is hardly “US bishops condemn…police misconduct”.

Not surprisingly, the bishops seem to have a more objective viewpoint and solution.

According to the very short article:

“We mourn those tragic events in which African Americans and others have lost their lives in altercations with law enforcement,” Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz of Louisville, Ky., said in a statement that was read by Bishop Ronny Jenkins, general secretary of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. “Racism is an evil which endures in our society and in our church.”

If one reads this paragraph carefully, there is no obvious direct tie-in to the Catholic leadership saying racism = unjust police violence in Ferguson, though I have no doubt that was the article author(s) intent.

The first statement remarks on tragic events, which I would guess 99% of people agree on, but there is no transition language into “racism is evil” which most people agree on as well.

Finally, I am not surprised at all the low quality of reporting from the St. Louis Dispatch.

The title sounds misleading. I don’t see any evidence that the USCCB is condemning the police. “lost life in altercation with law enforcement” is hardly “US bishops condemn…police misconduct”.

This is absolutely hilarious! Talk about a new journalistic low. I do not know from whence that title ways yanked, but it is worse than misleading. It is an absolute fabrication.
