I just picked up the latest issue for the first time. It suprised me how ‘liberal’ they seemed in the articles. Pro-premaritial sex (with commited relationships?), Women becoming priests. Is this the norm?

By and large they are a liberal rag with very few redeeming qualities. Along with the National Catholic Reporter, I’d give it a wide berth and spend your time on more orthodox and productive fare.

I am afraid it is the norm. I personally know not even one person who claims to be Catholic that does not reject one or more official teachings of the church. Nearly all endorse birth control. About half are pro abortion. Millions either cohabit or are in an invalid marriage. Most don’t believe in the sacrament of confession, but commit sacrilege every Sunday when they recieve the host in a state of mortal sin. My own sister has adult children that are not even baptized.

American Catholics tend to be politically liberal and have adopted the beliefs of the secular liberals. The only thing worse would be if they adopted conservative politics – religeous or secular.

I’ll just ignore that last dig at conservatives (I am a Catholic first, but for the most part conservative in my politics).

You either are so self-righteous that no one can meet your standards, or you’re going to the wrong parish: most of the Catholics I know (the ones in my parish) are completely in line with Church teaching, and it’s only a few (typically the ones over 50) who have some heterodox opinions here and there (women in the priesthood, primarily). I’m not disputing your view of most Catholics in America, but I am wondering about the total lack of observant Catholics in your life.

US Catholic is a magazine to be avoided as is National Catholic Reporter and also Catholic Digest is pretty poor and questionable.

Orthodox magazines include Our Sunday Visitor, National Catholic Register.

The way I remember the difference between the Register and the Reporter (as to which is the orthodox one) is that Reporter rhymes with Distorter… and one of my friends calls it the National Catholic Distorter b/c it’s so bad… ha! Anyway, it keeps me straight!!!

I think it really depends on where you live…what richbansha said holds true in my Archdiocese, and I’d bet in most of the ‘liberal’ blue states as well.

In my own life, I wonder about the lack of observant Catholics myself. I am truly amazed at what passes for Catholic in my neck of the woods. I am starting to think that I should take advantage of the fact that there are many Spanish speaking parishes in my area. Perhaps if I joined one of these, I would find people who hold more traditional beliefs.

I owe you an explaination about the political thing. Certainly, everyone should make up their own mind about what they will and will not support in the voting booth. What I should have said is that it would be a mistake for Catholics, as a whole, to formally join forces with the American consevatives. They, especially the evangelical conservatives, tend to be hostile to Catholocism. Some are such extremists that joining them would be like joining Cromwell. As soon as they outlaw abortion ( a good thing ), they may start to persecute the Church ( a bad thing ).

It is my opinion – an opinion that is wide-open to dispute – that it would be easier and more humane to get the political liberals to junk the sinful pieces of the agenda than to win over the diehard evangelicals.

You know, my wife and I came back to the Faith a couple of years ago. We are both cradel catholics, but fell away over the years. So for twenty years we were out of the loop of catholic circles. In two years we have thrown out the pornography, finished Annulment of wifes first marriage, our marriaged blessed, now go to church every Sunday and observe holy days. We now go to confession, read the bible, say the rosary and teach our kids the faith. I was received into the church last Easter and Kim will be received this Easter.(please pray for her)

This all started when I read the outlines of the Catholic faith, watched a movie on Marian apparitions of the 20th century, listened to Scott Hahn tapes and surrounded ourselves with like-minded people…oh yeah, the Holy Spirit slapping me up side the head, saying “where’s your life heading?”

It saddens us to see so many people in church who don’t practice their faith(practice…how about believe IT!) or those that have watered down the faith. Church leaders, both clergy and lay people, stray away from orthodoxy. Some seem to be afraid of being called ‘catholic’ perferring to be ‘christian’. The more I see, the more simple minded I wish I could be. When I read US Catholic, man did that p*** me off! Like some one else said, the name says it all ‘U.S. not Roman Catholic’.

Worst of all, other people of different faiths will pick up a copy just to see what ‘those catholics are saying and believing’.

God help us and US all!

yes just one of many media outlets for dissenters and heretics allowed to masquerate under the word “Catholic”. National Catholic Reporter is another, and if possible, worse than USC.
