Here’s an interesting article worth reading. 🙂

'U.S. Parishioners More Outspoken About Church ‘Renovations’

I didn’t know that GIRM wants the tabernacle in a separate chapel, or that not more than one representation of a saint was generally allowed. Anyways, this article is good reading and gives a balanced look into the subject of the church renovations going on today.
The GIRM dosen’t want the tabernacle in a separate chapel. Nothing prohibits several different Saints pictures or statues in a church. What the GIRM does say is that there should only be one image of any given saint and that they should not distract the faithful from the celebration of the Mass. The tabernacle must not be on the altar of celebration. But located according to the directive of the local Bishop, first in the sanctuary away from the altar of celebration, second in a chapel suitable for private prayer, physically connected to the main church and easily located and clearly visible. An oil or wax lamp with a “true flame” must burn near it.

Dear Bro Rich,
Yes, that’s what I meant, not more than one representation per saint. Sorry if I didn’t word it right.

Yes, I read the info. They seem to want to discourage the tabernacle front, center. What is the reasoning behind that?

My church has several statues of Mary, a totally old-fashioned appearance, an altar rail etc… I think it’s beautiful. Some of these newer churches are not as pretty and lack the imagery that I like.

Well no not really. If you remember the pre-Vatican II sanctuary the altar was attached to the back wall and the tabernacle was in the middle of that altar usually. There is nothing wrong with that and really it’s the best place for the tabernacle. Still right where it used to be in the middle of the old altar atteched to the back wall. This would be away from the current altar where the Sacrifice of the Mass takes place as the GIRM and Liturgy documents require. The reason is that the tabernacle is not the focus of the Mass. What is taking place on the altar is.

Yes, we still have all that intact, but have another altar that the Mass is currently done on. But, the old altar with tabernacle is still in place, surrounded by statues. It’s really pretty.

It would also be a way to use those beautiful old altars, as well, which you can sometimes buy through antique sites and even on ebay. Our tabernacle is just to the left of the altar as you face it. It’s isn’t bad as a location, as our priest pays a great deal of attention to Our Lord reposed in the Tabernacle, only feet away from the altar.
