Dears friends in Christ,
Greetings from the Pearl of Africa, Uganda, East Africa. Today we Catholics in Uganda have marked 130 years since the first Catholic Missionaries stepped foot on our Ugandan soil bringing in the splendid news of salvation to the Ugandans. This was on the 17th/ February/1879 when Pere ( Father) Simeon Lourdel commonly known to Ugandans as Mapeera and Brother Amans of The society of Missionaries of Our lady of African Missions ( White Fathers) arrived at Kiggungu, Entebbe on the shores of Lake Victoria. We have had mass celebrate at Kiggungu at the spot where these two missionaries first set thier foot on Ugandan soil, by the Archbishop of Kampala, His Grace, Rt.Rev.Dr. Cyprian Kizito lwanga. This was during the reign of Kabaka (King) Mutesa 1 of Buganda Kingdom, who had made an appeal for missionaries to come to his kingdom as published in The Daily Telegraph, Nov/15/1875.
We are indeed very grateful for the zeal for the spread of the gospel to all ends of the earth as exhibited by these missionaries. The fundamental fruit of their seed of faith are the cherished 22 Uganda Martyrs who were killed between 1885 and 1887 culminating in the burning at Namugongo on the 3/June/1886. They also built a number of mission schools which up today are very instrumental in the educational sector.
We are challenged to love our faith today amidst the numerous challenges that we are facing.
MAY THE ALMIGHTY GOD BLESS YOU ALL.
