Alex,

You’re most welcome! Anything you can glean from the Ukrainian news items?

Peter

Anything online? Maybe I’ll try to let Google Translator take a stab at it.

They printed 25,000 copies of the Катехизм - in Ukrainian of “Christ our Passover” **«Христос – наша Пасха». **" The first print run is 60,000 copies. It took 10 years to produce and it is divided into three parts:

1 Church Faith «Віра Церкви»,
2 Church Prayer «Молитва Церкви»
3 Church Life «Життя Церкви».

S Prazdnikom!

The traditional Apostle’s Fast, June 20-28, entails fasting from meat, eggs, dairy, fish, oil, wine. Oil/Wine ok Tue/Thu, fish/oil/wine ok weekend.
We Russians can have fish, oil and wine today, the Nativity of the glorious Prophet and Forerunner John the Baptist. I would think everyone would on this glorius feast. 🙂

Today the great Forerunner comes from the barren womb of Elizabeth; the great Prophet of Prophets, whom none surpass in greatness. The radiant candlestick of the Light; the voice of the Word, the friend of the Bridegroom, preparing the Lord’s chosen people by purifying them with water before the coming of the Spirit. He is Zachariah’s offspring, the child of the wilderness, the preacher of repentance, and the cleanser of sins. He announced the Resurrection even to those in hell, and he always prays for our souls.

The Byzantine USA calendar has it marked as Solemn. I did have only one meal today with some dairy (in the evening) but not the rest.

Some use the Typikon such that if a saint is celebrated with a Doxology:
1-Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday, fish is allowed.
2-Wednesday or Friday, then wine and oil but no fish.
Saint celebrated with an All-Night Vigil:
3-Wednesday or Friday then wine and oil and fish.

All honors to the great prophet and forerunner!

To day, she who once was barren gives birth to Christ’s forerunner. He himself is the fulfillment of all prophecy; for in the Jordan, he imposed his hand up on the Word of God whom the prophets have foretold and was shown to be his prophet, herald, and forerunner.

Well, I’m not Ruthenian so the Ruthenian Catholic Church AKA Byzantine Catholic Church in America is not my jurisdiction. I find it odd that on such a Feast Day they would have fasting and abstinence. The Church only celebrates three nativities and this is one. I definitely enjoyed my lovely piece of salmon in honor of the the voice of the Word, the Forerunner of Light, the radiant candlestick of the Light, the friend of the Bridegroom, the child of the wilderness, the preacher of repentance, and the cleanser of sins. 🙂

And, again, I think it’s great that the UGCC chose this wonderful Feast day for the release of the this long awaited Catechism.

“In Soviet Russia, John the Baptist cuts off your head!”

Using the parallel new beginnings: birth of the forerunner, baptism of the Kievan Rus, fulfillment of dream to materialize a unique Catechism. The baptism of the Rus-Ukraine by St. Vladimir took place in ~ 988 in Kyiv, after he was baptised at Chersonesus Crimea (then Taurica), so Patriarch Sviatoslav Shevchuk said:
“Marking the celebration of the 1000th anniversary of the baptism of Rus-Ukraine of 988 and exit from the underground Church in Ukraine to crystalize the idea of a new Catechism, in which Christian faith is transmitted in line with their own millennial ideas.”
Did you see how the Russian Orthodox mark that day? In 2006 on Friday:

Fast. Fish Allowed

There’s some video of the release here. That appears to be Sister Luiza Ciupa at the table amid the clergy 👍

Hoping for some press in English at some point… 🙂

 Thanks! It seemed too big a Feastday for there to not have been intention behind the release coinciding with it. 🙂

You’re clearly better than I am that you can understand that calendar. Of all the calendars I’ve seen this one has always been most confusing to me.
We follow the OCA calendar which is posted on our parish website and we’re all given as wall calendars in December, from St. Tikhon’s, whenever they arrive from the press. There are several hanging up in the church building as well. Bro-in-law visiting for annual visit wants Mexican for lunch, I’m thinking fish taco and salad… or just salad. I’m assisting at a funeral Mass late morning so I’m going to be very hungry by the time that is over. 🙂

Thanks again for the 1000th anniversary of the baptism of Rus-Ukraine info. One of these days we’ll get more in a language I understand. 🙂
