A bit embarrasing question from one born in the Philippines, but what are the Byzantine ties to that country (aside from Greek/Russian/Ukrainian expats, which I think are not many)? The Philippines is a very Latin country, having been evangelized by Spain in the 1500’s.

There is a strong Eastern Orthodox mission presence, and several “independent orthodox” groups as well have presence in the Philippines. This indicates an interest in Eastern Spirituality and/or praxis.

The UGCC providing access to that spirituality and praxis without the requisite breaking communion with Rome is a good thing for those Filipinos for whom the western spirituality doesn’t enable them to accept the graces offered in the Liturgy.

I suppose it would be the Eastern Catholics living there, as well as any other persons who wish to worship with them.

Can you define what constitutes an “expat”? Would that be most of us Eastern Catholics and Orthodox living in the US and Canada as well?

Why does there have to be ties? Fr. Olexander is a missionary at heart, he brings the faith where it can grow. He has been trying to start a group in the country. His visit is upon the invitation of a Seminary to do a talk on the Byzantine Rite. They did the Liturgy, and a small group of Filipinos who are interested in the Byzantine Rite have committed to be the mission group. The mustard seed has been planted, we’ll see what happens next.

I also wish I was there… o:

Oh, and hooray! 🙂
Now, I am happy to see the UGCC here in the Far East! 🙂

That is absolutely awesome. Is anyone on these forums in the Phillipines?

Patriarch Sviataslav has been saying that the Ukrainian Church is not just for Ukrainians…

An expatriate is a foreigner living in another country long term (but usually not a permanent resident), for example, to manage a business or a company based in that person’s own home country. The Philippines, for example has many Japanese and American expats

This is good to hear !

aina.org/books/bftc/bftc.htm - having read how the Church of The East was the first to bring the good news to China , many centuries ago , presence of another Eastern Catholic Church could be a strenght to help to do away with the problems brought on by the divisions and to help the Phillipines to be a fertile source of missionaries to China , helping them to know how The Lord of history is there , to help not only themselves but the family lines too through the grace of repentance and mercy and how every life and child is thus so precious !

I believe this is the “tie” that brother Porthos was looking for. It was an invitation.

Great news, btw!👍

Blessings,
Marduk
But the mission has no canonical Ukrainian Catholics among them. The success of the mission depends on the work of these young men, if they can keep the faith and eventually be received into the UGCC.

So what if there are no Ukranian Catholic there? There was an invitation, presumably with the OK of the local proper ordinary.

We’re talking about the mission now, not the talk given to the Seminarians.

I doubt that the mission is under the aegis of the UGCC. It would have to be under the aegis of the local Latin bishop to have any canonical validity.

In this case, it would be Archbishop Luis Tagle.
