No Volodymyr, I think very few Americans know how bad the situation is in Moldova. Prayers for that poor country indeed.

As I understand a priest has been coming from Ivano-Frankivsk to assist in forming a mission, and this is an extension of that with the hopes of forming a permanent parish with a resident priest.

I had no idea.

Κύριε Ἰησοῦ Χριστέ, Υἱέ τοῦ Θεοῦ, ἐλέησόν με τὸν ἁμαρτωλόν.

Recommend any reference sources?

Peace

Probably much more so among Greek Catholics with roots in that general geographic area, Ukrainians and Romanians among them.

Not a bad primer for the uninitiated, courtesy of Wikipedia: Transnistria

Since I’m Canadian, some further details would help to understand how Moldova is in such bad shape.

For starters Moldova is a significant drug trafficking place for Asian drugs to get into Western Europe; there is abundant governmental corruption (dissolving the Parliment is a favorite national pastime); and there are high internal tensions and human rights issues over Transnistria, a breakaway region in the eastern portion of Moldova bordering Ukraine where there was a civil war with Moldova in the early 1990s.

It is one of, if not the poorest, country in Europe, is also a major center of human sex trafficking and has had historical abortion percentages approaching 60% of all pregnancies.

Wow. Not quite as appallingly and abomi- nably awful as Islom Karimov’s Uzbekistan, but not even close to paradise on earth, either.

How did Moldova fall on such tough times, and how can this disastrous state of affairs be reversed? Do reform-minded parties or movements that wish to tackle the corruption, drug smuggling, and human trafficking have any chance of being elected or influencing the government? In short, is there any hope for the future of Moldova?
