Ugh! That Was Discouraging

I might be visiting Michigan for a few weeks soon, so I decided to check out where the Latin Masses are in that diocese. The times on the website seem to contradict each other, so I decided to call the Cathedral there to clarify.

A man with a priestly voice answered and I said, “Hi. I was wondering if you still offer the Latin Mass on Wednesdays?” And he snipped, “The Church hasn’t said Mass in Latin for many, many years.” I immediately saw what I was up against and kept my cool and replied, “Oh, it is still listed on a number of websites at 5:30 on Wed, I think…” No response. So, I asked, “Where in the diocese is it offered?” And he sighed and reluctantly told me to try “parish x.” I said, “Well, thank you very much” and he slammed the phone down.

I am just not used to a hostile reaction to mentioning the Latin Mass these days. Feeling a little discouraged.😊

This brings to mind a comment made by the rector of one very famous cathedral in the US immediately after Summorum Pontificum was released: when asked if the cathedral would offer the EF, the rector snapped “No. Not as long as I’m rector.” And true to his word, during the tenure of the then local Ordinary, the EF was not offered there. I don’t know if the same person is still rector, but despite a new local Ordinary, (one who, by all accounts, is far more agreeable to the EF than was his predecessor), the cathedral has not, (at least not to my knowledge), offered the EF.

Just a suggestion: it might be best to contact the parish. Even if the cathedral itself was listed as offering the EF, people there (clergy or otherwise) would likely not know (or, in some cases, even care) about where the EF might be available.

Thank you. There is one Mass offered on Sundays (could be a lot worse). I’ll attend and then ask around if there is a weekday somewhere–maybe in a convent or whatever.

Thanks for the link. Lansing is in driving distance of where I’ll be, so at least I’ll have a couple week days of EF Mass.👍
 
You’ll know them by their fruits indeed.

Reminds me of a call to a local parish’s office to ask if they were going to have the EF in the evening on a Holy Day of Obligation. “No, we celebrate that on Sunday. Please go to our website in the future for Mass times”. The woman on the phone seemed irritated.

I check the bulletin online, and right there in black and white. EF 6 PM I think it was. Sad.
But at least she inadvertantly helped make sure there was one more in the pews that evening 🙂

Welcome to Michigan. I grew up in southeast Michigan, and there’s a lot of people there like that.
 
The OF is likely all he knew before the seminary and all he learned at the seminary so he’s just spitting up, regurgitating and similarly appropriate verbs, all he knows.
 
Try calling Assumption Grotto in Detroit. It has been many years, but I think it is on the North East Side. God bless your efforts with success.🙂

If you can’t make it to a TLM on Sunday, you might want to consider a visit to the “parish x” that the priestly voice mentioned.

A parish that the voice suspects of having TLMish tendencies is probably one of the better ones, even if they don’t have the Mass of Ages yet.

Don’t be discouraged. Even during the life of Jesus, there was an apostle who did the enemy’s dirty work. By allowing this to happen, Jesus was telling us that if it can happen during His time here on earth, it can certainly happen - and *will happen - *in ours…

But remember, the gates of hell will not prevail. 👍

Latin Mass or not, it is a pity that anyone one, much less a Catholic diocesan office, woult treat a caller like that. It would hardly be more acceptable if one was calling for directions or some other mundane information. It reflects poorly on that office.

FYI - I work in the* government* I do not tolerate treating the public like that. I have had to discipline people over that. There is no excuse for rude behavior.
 
When speaking about the clergy, please remember that they are human beings too. Just because someone is less agreeable is no reason to say that the devil or some other evil force is using him. Many people are disagreeable. In this case, the poster did not say that the person was a priest. Reread the post. Such statements are not necessary to make your point.
