Uh, I have been urged by some Catholic group to attend Latin mass or face damnation

PLEASE, PLEASE don’t take away from this that all people who attend the Tridentine Mass are nutcases and crackpots. Fortunately, there are many of us that aren’t. I am very sorry that you had to hear that. Sadly, there are some crazies out there and you happened to have a brush with them, No, you are not falling into perdition for going to the OF Mass. I hope this doesn’t turn you off to the EF mass since you would be missing out on something very beautiful and holy. Don’t listen to the crackpots. They don’t know what they are talking about.

Precisely - I would be concerned about ANY group who threatened you with “damnation” if you didnt do precisely what they tell you to do. It sounds Cult like. IMO - most Catholics who prefer Tradition are not that way and in fact are probably treated as a pariah in more cases than the reverse. So there are those crazies on both sides of the fence. But it was Our Lord who said - " By their fruits shall you know them. " So if a group is treating you in a non Catholic manner , which is as you described - whether they attend the OF or the EF - the actions themselves should tell you all you need to know.

…I am kind of at a loss for words. I was born in 1989, so I didn’t even know until now that there were different forms of the mass. I have been told that I am in heresy because I attend a regular, English-speaking mass. Am I missing something? If this is the case, and I will be damned (ouch, touch word), why is there an English mass at all? Can someone fill me in, I feel there is a lot I missed out on.

even the Catholic Church does not claim the authority to damn anyone to hell so you might ask your friends when Christ came down to earth and endowed them with this authority.

I agree – I’ll be very happy to have the legitimate translation back when (whenever) the new version of the Missal comes into force. But I’ve literally had this conversation with people who think the “Novus Ordo” is evil: “It’s invalid because the words of Institution have been changed!!!1!” – “Not when the Mass is said in Spanish, Latin, or really any language other than English. So those are valid, then? It’s fine right now in Mexico, Poland, Italy, etc., and when the new translation comes into effect for English, we’ll be on safe ground here in the U.S. too?” – “Um … shut up, yer a modernist!!!1!”

Same thing in French, it is “et pour la multitude” (pro multis).

In any case isn’t the new English missal going to fix that problem?
