Uh-oh, I made a promise

Please forgive me if I am freaking out, but, when I was roughly 13 years old I told God I would choose a certain path in my life if he revealed this certain path to me. I feel horribly bound to my word; I don’t want to be dishonest to God. At the same time, I really don’t want to be bound by this promise. I have asked God many times after this to let me “take back” my word. Do you think God still binds me to this promise? Please help me.

I doubt he is holding you to a promise made when you were basically still a child. I don’t even think he would hold you to it if you were older.

Talk to your priest, I think (although I’m not sure) that priests have the authority to dissolve certain minor vows, and if not then the Bishop certainly does.

Also, a promise to God may or may not be valid depending on how well you understand what you are doing. A priest can help you figure this out.

Theban, I know you mean well, but I respectfully don’t think this is really necessary: batman was 13 (?!) when he said this. No parent holds his son to what the son “promised” when he was 13.

Telling the young man to speak to a priest - especially at a time when churches are closed due to covid and the young man may be unable to do so - might scare him into thinking he’s done something really bad (he hasn’t)

Batman, live without fear. God understands.

Well, it’s not my intention to make anyone afraid.

Still, I have to disagree that his age at the time automatically dispenses the promise. It is very probable it is not a valid vow, but I am not qualified to say so.

I would hope that people still have some way of contacting a priest during all this?
In my country the churches are still open even though masses are dispensed, and there is also an email service where you can contact a priest. If the OP would like, I could send him the email address, if there’s nothing like it in his diocese.
